Hi, as you can guess ... linux newbie here. i'v installed arch, xorg, xfce, intel drivers, xdm the xorg serv works ... startxfce4 works like a charm from any user(root;ghecko) i'v edited inittab , and in rrc.conf at daemons i have dbus 1st.It boots into the xdm gui i provide the credentials(correct ones...) and it just flashes for 2 sec with a black screen authentification failed!( i have tryed also gdm ..it does the same thing) what am i missing? i'm more than happy to provide further info about the configs , YES i have searched the wikipages for hours and no success
THis is my inittab
# Boot to console
#id:3:initdefault:
# Boot to X11

Try starting it as a daemon.
Modify /etc/rc.conf
Offline
Also double check that you have the correct keymap (keyboard layout) set in your rc.conf.
Burninate!

Something else to check - is .xsession executable?

The keymap in rc.conf is only relevant for the ttys, X doesn't look at it. So if
the issue is an incorrect keymap, you should fix in in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … youts_in_X
for more details).

You're completely right. I somehow got it in my head that DM's get their keymap from rc.conf. I blame early morning and insufficient caffeine levels.

Sorry for my English but check you .xinitrc in home of your user and uncoment "# exec startxfce4" and i think works fine.

What if you boot into runlevel 3 instead of 5 (meaning id:3:initdefault: and you comment out the x:5... line) and you type "startx"? Can you log in from there?

I have made a personal commitment not to reply in topics that start with a lowercase letter. Proper grammar and punctuation is a sign of respect, and if you do not show any, you will NOT receive any help (at least not from me).

xdm uses .xsession rather than .xinitrc (although you can set up .xsession to call .xinitrc)

I have exactly the same problem
In init 3 launching X via startx works like a charm
In init 5 xdm shows up, I can login and then it comes back to xdm ...
