Hi to all.
I have an Acer emachines E525 laptop with Intel gma 4500m graphics. I've installed arch with a display connected to the laptop and made the install from there. When i try to boot without the display connected after some boot messages the screen goes black. With auto login and a white wallpaper i can barely see my desktop icons against the white background.Its like the contrast is too low. I have a dual boot setup and the screen works fine on Win7 and other distros i tried before.

add
acpi_osi=Linux
to the kernel line in grub. Then when the screen goes black on start, change the brightness with the fn key and screen should work fine.

FWIW this didn't work for me ( on an Acer eMachines E725 ) however this did:
setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00
( Taken from: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Intel_GMA )
You can simply put it in /etc/rc.local file. Fairly major disadvantage is not being able to see the bootup messages though
EDIT1: Actually, it does work it seems, though the buttons are backwards This is a good enough solution (for my purposes) in that the owner doesn't need to see the boot messages anyway and leaving the above in the rc.local will set it once the system's started but if I need to see them, I can.
