Make gnome3 log in really fast

I like gnome 3 and gnome-shell's way of working, but it's not as fast as I would like when logging in. I use lxdm, because it really is faster than gdm, and I would use xfce, except for the fact that it just doesn't have gnome-shell's overlay. Any ideas on how to get gnome 3 to login really fast?

Try using e4rat: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/E4rat

It makes the whole boot proces faster, esp. starting X and logging in wink

Re: Make gnome3 log in really fast

Having never used gnome I figured I'd not have much to contribute, but I also thought of e4rat when I first read the OP.  So, I'll second that recommendation.

It does speed up the whole boot process, but starting X gets the biggest boost in my experience.

Re: Make gnome3 log in really fast

gnome logs pretty fast. maybe you have improper configurations or is just starting to many junks unrelated to gnome.

Re: Make gnome3 log in really fast

Wow, e4rat does speed things up! I am going to try that bootchart thing to see how fast, but it is obviously faster! Until I have lxdm start gnome, wonder must be right, because once it appears, everything appears instantly, but it still takes some time to get there. It's not any real big amount, but it is noticeable, and I'd like to get rid of it.

Turns out I had a lot of extensions enabled that I wasn't using. Thanks for that e4rat tip, it's awesome!

Re: Make gnome3 log in really fast

Log in really fast by not using a login manager, just start gnome with startx and a ~/.xinitrc file.
