[SOLVED] Sound not working on new install

I've just installed arch for the first time and for some reason, the sound isn't working. I've installed GNOME, and so I'm wondering if it has something to do with alsa and pulseaudio conflicting. I've tried a few fixes from the alsa/pulseaudio wiki pages, none of which have worked.

I also have a Radeon 6870 graphics card, and am using HDMI to connect to my monitor. However, my monitor doesn't have speakers so I don't want to use the HDMI sound. I'm wondering if this might be a conflict as well. Again, have tried a few fixes for this, which haven't worked.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Alsa and Pulseaudio play nicely together.  When you say, "The sound isn't working", what do you mean?
How are you trying to play audio?

Can you open a mixer?
Have you ensured that everything is unmuted and the volumes up? On all the audio cards?  There should be a PA device, and a real device.
Do you have pavucontrol installed?
If you "play" audio, but cannot hear it, do the audio level controls in pavucontrol bounce?

Is there anything interesting in /proc/asound?

When I play sound from Amarok, YouTube, or try to test the speakers using the built-in sound settings panel, no sound comes out. Everything's unmuted, the volumes are up, and I can open a mixer.

I installed pavucontrol, and yes, testing with a song in Amarok, the audio level controls bounced.

Looks like I solved it. Turns out the Master in alsamixer for the PCH card was at 0. Turned it up and the sound works. Thanks for the help!
