Pulseaudio speedup

Hi

Out of nowhere Pulseaudio has been giving me grief.
When playing anything - through Mplayer (cli) Gnome Mplayer or Clementine - audio and video starts at double the speed.
The only way to watch or listen to anything is to stop Pulseaudio process first. Killing it doesn't work as it just reloads.
Once it's stopped everything works, BUT I have to wait 30 secs before a video loads as it's obviously looking for pulseaudio and
then timing out.

I use XFCE and Pulseaudio was installed with GDM - I don't particularly care for GDM, but I had so many headaches with
Slim (polkit etc) - that I went back to GDM.

Can I remove Pulseaudio? Or will GDM complain?

Or, alternatively, what would be the fix for this problem?

Using GDM with XFCE seems bloated but I shouldn't argue with that... gdm depends on gnome-settings-daemon which depends on pulseaudio. You can recompile gnome-settings-daemon with the flag --disable-pulse to get rid of it properly.

Shouldn't it still be possible to keep pulseaudio installed to satisfy the libraries but not use it? When you say the process reloads by itself, there must be some code in gnome-settings-daemon interfering that way. A hack you can try is "chmod -x /usr/bin/pulseaudio" and then telling your apps to output sound directly to ALSA.

The speed difference *might* be due to confusion between 44.1 and 48khz.

Thanks for the replies.
I decided to get rid of GDM completely and go with Slim - just had to spend about a minute or two reading the wiki page and it sorted my polkit issues.
Still wondering what pulseaudio's problem was, but as someone who's never really seen the point of pulseaudio in anycase - I'm glad to be rid of it.
And the bulky gnome stuff as well ;-)
