I recently tried to switch to linux-lts kernel by installing the package and editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. However after restarting my system with linux-lts kernel, I found significance increase in booting times and shutdown times. Also starting and using applications look a bit sluggish and also sound of my speakers have dropped. Any idea why? Some bug?

You'll really need to do some digging, I have multiple systems running linux-lts here and no performance/shutdown issues (except that my server likes to keep rebooting instead of shutting down
).
