I have been running mainly my nvidia cards and their decent proprietary drivers. How do the ATI drivers compare? Reason why is because I am debating on upgrading to an ATI card.

i know that
"ATI FireGL 7800 64M" (in a thinkpad) and
"ATI Radeon 9200 128M" (as third graphics adapter on a server besides an old trident3d and a onboard chip)
runs perfectly with "radeon" in the 2.4.23 kernel (but not with 2.4.22 because this kernel has an old gatos-radeon-module)

Once I got my ATI 2800 pro running (a little bit of work) it's runs beautifully. IMHO ATI offer better value for money than Nvidia in terms of the power available

Has anyone compared ATI's proprietary drivers with the OpenSource radeon module?

Someone made some benchmarks between the different ATI-Drivers for Linux:

I'm using the binary drivers from ATI (without even testing the others). I'm quite happy with them!

well, call me lazy, but i'm content with the kernel-builtin radeon (2.4.23) ... it renders in celestia and stellarium fast (... maybe when i come to more complicated games than bzflag or tuxracer, i will have a look at something "binary") :-)

I play ET with no problems using the xfree86 distributed radeon drivers.

how do you get the buitin modules to work? I have recompiled my kernel and also compiled radeon as a module, but can't now figure out how to get X (x.org) to use that driver - I currently don't have direct rendering...
