Driver status for AMD/ATI (onchip) graphic cards

Hi!

I am planning to buy a new computer and wonder how well the AMD driver work. I know, there are 2 drivers and the opensource one is not the best one for 3d-graphics and gaming.

How well is the catalyst driver working? Are there any problems with the catalyst driver, artifacts, crashes, etc?
How does it work with the Llano-CPUs? Has anyone made some benchmarks with unigine heaven and could post it here?

I heard about slow updates of the catalyst driver, sometimes weeks after an xorg-update, is this still true?

Any other interesting information about the Llano-CPUs and Linux are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Are there problems with wine and is CrossfireX working/senseful with the onchip graphic?

I think you can make weeks months for the xorg updates. There is an Xorg 1.11 repo though, and Catalyst just works fine with that. No experience with Llano or Crossfire - I have a HD 6950 and an E-350 (integrated HD 6310).

Edit: yes indeed that was a major typo. Apologies for that >_>

@B, catalyst only works for xorg <1.12 (typo, right?)

Re: Driver status for AMD/ATI (onchip) graphic cards

I have a Llano APU (A8-3500M). Using Catalyst drivers (12.1) and everything works. Xonotic plays great! I've kept Xorg at 1.11. We're at the mercy of AMD there.

Note: I'm using KDE. Last time I checked GNOME3/Cinnamon (under Ubuntu with Catalyst 12.1) there were still had some glitches but it was usable.
