Can't get xdm to launch xfce

Hi. Just did a fresh install. Everything worked up until I tried logging into xfce from xdm.
Here is my ~/.xsession

#!/bin/sh
/bin/bash --login -i ~/.xinitrc

Here is my ~/.xinitrc

#!/bin/sh
exec startxfce4

I had to create these files manually. I seem to remember last time I did an arch install with xdm and xfce these files were created for me.

Anyway, when I try to login xdm just goes black for a second then comes back asking for a login again (so it's like it's failing to start xfce)

What should I do?
