Question about new udev update

While upgrading my system, I received this message:

udev changes:
 * if your kernel does not provide /dev/loop-control, you need to manually
load the 'loop' module before using losetup

I don't do anything funny with my kernel, everything is direct from the Arch repositories as-is... Should this message concern me? I don't believe I ever use 'losetup' (directly anyways), unless mounting with the "-o loop" option uses it. Basically I just want to know if it is necessary for me to load the loop module or not. Thanks.

Re: Question about new udev update

Did you go check if /dev/loop-control is there?

Re: Question about new udev update

Maybe this is info for people who are using some custom kernel.

You should always mention which version does you issue concern as "latest upgrade" and the like don't say much.

Re: Question about new udev update

The version of udev is 181-4, and /dev/loop-control does exist.

Re: Question about new udev update

...Thus, if the file contains an entire file system, the file may then be mounted as if it were a disk device.

Files of this kind are often used for CD ISO images and floppy disc images. Mounting a file containing a filesystem via such a loop mount makes the files within that filesystem accessible. They appear in the mount point directory.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loop_device

You can check if the module is loaded with: lsmod | grep loop

Re: Question about new udev update

I don't think you need to load the module if it is not unless you also don't have /dev/loop-control. At least, it seems possible to have /dev/loop-control without loading the module and the message only says to load the module if you lack it.

Re: Question about new udev update

I don't know if my issue is related, but I have a problem with udev after my last update which leaves me unable to boot.

The pacman log included the notice Axanon mentions, plus

 2012-03-15 21:55] upgraded libgexiv2 (0.3.1-1 -> 0.3.1-2)
[2012-03-15 21:55] Users no longer need to be in the 'camera' group to use camera devices
[2012-03-15 21:55] upgraded libgphoto2 (2.4.11-1 -> 2.4.13-1)

On boot, I get

Sat Mar 17 08:54:04 2012: :: Starting UDev Daemon [BUSY] [DONE]
Sat Mar 17 08:54:04 2012: :: Triggering UDev uevents [BUSY] [DONE]

Sat Mar 17 08:54:04 2012: udevd[197]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/check-ptp-camera' '/lib/udev/check-ptp-camera': No such file or directory

The error repeats until the computer overheats and shuts down (not directly related to this issue--this is because the frequency scaling doesn't start).

I'm using the standard Arch kernel and have the loop module in my rc.conf.

Re: Question about new udev update

I had the same issue - although my machine booted fine.

I just removed all references to the camera group in udev's files (there was only one or two files to change, IIRC). Cameras still mount fine...

Re: Question about new udev update

Thanks Jason: editing the udev rule in /etc removed the warning, but unfortunately I still have a problem (I don't want to thread hijack, so if my issue is better taken elsewhere, do let me know!).

With my login manager disabled, I can now boot and log in as root. Suspend to RAM resumes to a mess of green squares, while starting xorg produces a blank screen.

The boot looks uneventful:

Re: Question about new udev update

I just removed all references to the camera group in udev's files (there was only one or two files to change, IIRC). Cameras still mount fine...

Does that mean just deleting the file /etc/udev/rules.d/90-libgphoto2.rules would be a safe thing to do?

Philosophy is looking for a black cat in a dark room. Metaphysics is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there. Religion is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there and shouting "I found it!". Science is looking for a black cat in a dark room with a flashlight.

Re: Question about new udev update

Perhaps. Renaming it might be a better initial tactic smile

Don't need to delete it.

use a text editor to open /etc/udev/rules.d/90-libgphoto2.rules

and comment out the line with check-ptp-camera in it as below:-

#PROGRAM="check-ptp-camera 06/01/01", MODE="0660", GROUP="camera"
