[SOLVED] Kernel 3.3 pata dvd/cdrom drives disappeared

With the latest update to kernel 3.3 in testing my dvd and cdrom burners stopped working. They are pata drives. The dvd on my laptop (SATA) is working o.k., so maybe this is related to PATA. The 64 bit system does not even list them as /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1 anymore. It seems like they are not existent. The hardware is o.k. because I tested this with a parallel Installation of arch (32 bit) on a separat partition which still runs kernel 3.2.

I filed a bug report
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/29030

Is someone experiencing the same?

Harvey

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 3.3 pata dvd/cdrom drives disappeared

Your device is not recognized .
Try this thread if it helps.
It could be a hardware issue too.

If you think kernel 3.3 is what caused it, try downgrading the kernel.

No joy. Udev-compat doesn't even exists anymore.

Nope. Same hardware works on kernel 3.2

Thats what I suspect too. Let's see if my bug report leads anywhere.

Thank you for your time

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 3.3 pata dvd/cdrom drives disappeared

Just wanted to chime in and say I'm seeing the same thing on my (non-testing) install after upgrading from 3.2.11 to 3.2.12. Same symptoms as Harey -- nothing in dmesg; inserting a cd doesn't trigger any udev events; no /dev/sr*.

Downgrading back to 3.2.11 brought my PATA cd and dvd drives back.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 3.3 pata dvd/cdrom drives disappeared

Could you try adding "ahci" and "sd_mod" to the MODULES array in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and then rebuilding the initramfs?

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 3.3 pata dvd/cdrom drives disappeared

Had the same issue with 3.2.12 (not testing).

As I noted in the comments to your bug report, janek found another workaround that is less invasive than a kernel downgrade: Add pcie_aspm=force to the kernel command line.

It seems that most users reporting this problem have a Gigabyte Mainboard.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 3.3 pata dvd/cdrom drives disappeared

Aha! Yes, I have a gigabyte mainboard (GA-EP45-UD3R). Many of the gigabyte boards from around that time have the PATA connection hanging off their RAID controller (JMicron JMB363 controller), since the ICH10R southbridge dropped support for PATA but gigabyte still wanted to include it.

Haven't tried the pcie_aspm=force option, but now I'm kicking myself since I actually had it written down on a scrap of paper since I saw in another thread some needed it to get their machine to boot.

This probably makes this problem a duplicate of the other one because the difference is likely that they are booting off the PATA drive which of course doesn't work.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 3.3 pata dvd/cdrom drives disappeared

Add pcie_aspm=force to the kernel boot line in /boot/grub/menu.lst worked around this for me in 3.3 too. Waiting for a kernel fix...

Not necessary. Just wait for 3.3.1 and 3.2.14 to hit the mirrors and then this should be [SOLVED] wink
