Pacman -Syu leads to "Oh No!" screen after a reboot...

I updated Arch recently (last time I updated was around 10/2011) and was surprised by a greeting that states that my system cannot recover and I must log out. I did some searching around and I didn't find a solution to my issue. It may help to know that I did the filesystem.2011.12 (?) manual intervention as stated under Arch's news as well as the initscripts manual intervention (after downloading all the files necessary for a system update if that matters...).

Here's my .xsession-errors file after attempting to log into Gnome and successfully Ctrl+Alt+F2'ing to retrieve the data:
