shell-based solution to rip a movie DVD to an iso file

I know brasero and k9copy are able to write a DVD movie to an ISO file on a physical disc. I have searched around for a shell based solution to this but haven't found any. Most of what I have found allows for transcoding which is of no interest to me. I simply want to make a 1:1 copy of the DVD--->iso. Suggestions are welcome.

Note that dd does not work with encrypted DVDs.

EDIT: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=43487 but this will actually "rip" the dirtree from the DVD, not make an iso.

Dd does work just fine; it will just copy the encryption along. Xbmc e.g. can still play it - if it has been built with libdvdcss support.

Try the same with dd as B suggested, works here too.

The trick is to play the movie with e.g. VLC for a few minutes first. Then rip the disk.

I'm having problems using dd / ddrescue / dcfldd on many discs, especially those with different types of scramble protection. I really like the Windows solution "AnyDVD" which pretty much removes all sorts of protection on what seems to be a low level, making is possible to handle the material in any way you like. In Linux, I have yet to find a good solution.

It would be ideal if it was possible to call libdvdcss for an almost(!) 1:1 ISO copy, meaning that the material shall be untouched but the protection removed. This is pretty much what happens when I pull the Windows version of "dd" after I have had AnyDVD "fix" the disc. The same disc and operation gives me an headache on the Linux machine. Sigh.

I've been looking on all sorts of software, but neither "dvdbackup" nor "vobvopy" gives me any joy, and all sorts of "dd" gives me I/O errors on the disc in question. Sigh.
