I'm trying with no luck to play some mp3 files from banshee. I installed all its optional dependencies. I also installed gnome-media for having gstreamer-properties; I selected my alsa device there and the test works. But when I try to play a file in banshee I get a bunch of:
[Error 14:11:15.138] GStreamer core error: StateChangeI tried a suggestion from a gentoo forum post I found of trying to play a file with gst-launch-0.10, and I got no sound and this output.
Other non-gstreamer players (audacious) are working fine. any idea?
BTW I do not have pulseaudio and would like to *not* install it on this machine

Do you have all the gstreamer plugins installed?

Yes, looks correct. Which DE or WM are you using? I don't know what your objection to Pulseaudio is, but I can say I'm using with Gnome and KDE and all works quite well, including Banshee. Also I've used it in with various WMs, openbox, fluxbox, etc. with no problems.

I'm on openbox. I'll be using this computer for audio production, and pulseaudio doesn't play nice with the JACK audio server, and since it's not needed I'd like to avoid it

To explain better: I use pulseaudio on my laptop and I really like it, it works great; it *can* also run alongside of jack, there are some scripts in the wiki to do this, but I read that it can be cause of xruns. So I wanted to see if it's possible to go without it - so far everything but Banshee has worked.

I didn't manage to solve the problem (so I'm not marking the thread as solved), but in the meanwhile tried out Clementine and fell in love with it. It even has JACK output.
