some art for archlinux ... a first try

there was some discussion about different distributions ... and in such a discussion Archlinux was compared with Gentoo

-> i agree, that archlinux has a more stable system, a better (ok, maybe i'm subjective) package-manager, much more packages (and growing) and some other advantages, BUT here something i realized archlinux is missing:

archlinux has only 2 logos, no backgrounds, no themes for a DE,  no splash-screens, no archlinux-feeling-element

... i tried to do something about that and made 2 backgrounds:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=7338
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=7330

-> what do you (archers, archlinux-users) think about them / the whole idea?

-------------------------
just to compare, here some gentoo-backgrounds and other things:

Re: some art for archlinux ... a first try

I was thinking about recommending that we start having some type of wallpaper thing going on and maybe some additional art.  Maybe have like a package eventually that one can install, which could have things like arch related wallpapers, maybe icons, a arch linux tailored grub background, or a gdm tailored theme with nice arch linux stuff in it. I am really not one for fractual wallpapers, but any wallpaper for Arch is better than none.  If I eventually figure out how to use GIMP, I may eventually make my own.

Re: some art for archlinux ... a first try

maybe it can be done by the user alone  i use splash boot and got the tty with a archlinux jpg that a person here posted i liked the ideia and copy it tongue " shame on me " so i can provide mi conf files for splash boot at 1280x 1024 someone can do the same for 1024 and so on make another kernel pkgbuild with the patch make a pakage with the themes that we user start providing and we "got  pacman " tongue i say yes to making a arch theme

Re: some art for archlinux ... a first try

does anybody has the "official" logo in hi-resolution?

the problem with the pics on the www.archlinux.org is that you cannot do some great art in gimp because of the low resolution ... who made them? any original files?

Yea, an original file would be nice in a bit higher resolution.  One cool idea for a wallpaper is to have a Penguin with the Arch Linux logo tattooed on his arm, but I don't have the type of artistic ability to do something like that, heh.  One way to get the word out, would be to make one of those infamous buttons that says something like "Powered by Arch Linux," so servers running Arch Linux could kind of do free advertising for Arch Linux.  Plus I think a few people would want to brag about the distro they use on their website anyway, heh.

Re: some art for archlinux ... a first try

Well, actually that's pretty much what I did here for fun. I grabbed the bootsplash patch, hacked it a bit to work with a vanilla 2.4.21 and got myself the Arch boot logos nPn(?) posted here a while ago. I edited these pictures to fit 1024, slapped a (VT1..VT6) in the corner, and put the appropriate frame buffer commands to use these pictures as shell backgrounds into my rc.local.

Impressed the heck out of a few people here, and it's fun to do in a boring hour, despite my despise concerning useless eye candy. smile

Oh, and there's the "Got pacman?" picture used as an unobtrusive X11 background. That's Archish enough for my taste.

If nPn doesn't write his tutorial on Bootsplash and shell backgrounds under Arch soon, someone else might want to do this. *hinthint*

Maybe somone could post the original gimp(or what ever)-file. So we could
(I woud do it) have an svg(vector-graphic) for the logo. Other wise it must be
modelled after the low-res pics from the website.
btw. which font has been used for that "archlinux" in the logo.

Re: some art for archlinux ... a first try

while experimenting with bootsplash ... here a background with more power :-)

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=7371

it would be nice, the original author of the official archlogo provides me with a hi-res-pic (or svg) and a font-name ... that it may look like the logo, what i'm building

-> a background like this maybe ok for the background in the consoles, isn't it? (black, only something at the right side ... maybe with a nice quote --- didnt find out a better one --- any ideas for a "spell" (actually i cant find a better word for it: the word i mean is in german : "Werbespruch") for archlinux)

"slogan" will do, dp.

Actually I'm planning on asking a couple furry artists to draw a vixen/fox archer and slap the slogan "Mean, lean, and to the point." below the picture to get the point of Arch across. Nice thing to have as a t-shirt. Yes, I do like puns. smile

I second that, since I'm currently converting my servers to AL...
