First of all always carefully read logs and look for the first error.
In this case it was:
[ 33.562] (EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
which most probably means, that your KMS (kernel mode setting) is either not enabled or you have an older radeon module loaded. Have you added radeon to initramfs? If so you should run
sudo mkinitcpio -p linux
to update it.
Offline
Using code tags would have made your post nicer. Anyway, I've got exactly the same error
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
and I'm going to post a bug report. Edit: I'll wait until after I rebuild the initramfs. Edit again: That didn't work and there's already a bug report at https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/29178.

I did see that error but it didn't help in fixing the issue.
I do have radeon in MODULES="radeon" in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and did sudo mkinitcpio -p linux reboot with no luck.
I think KMS has always been working as I have a high res screen from early in the boot.

I didn't see the bug report, thanks for pointing that out.

I had the same issue and this worked. I'm somewhat new at dealing with bugs. How can I know if it is safe to switch back to the non git driver?
Also what's the difference between them?

Same problem here, X doesn't start with xf86-video-ati 6.14.4-1.
Downgrading to 6.14.3-2 helped me to get back to X.
//Edit: As stated in the bug report recompiling the package via ABS solved the problem for me, too. 6.14.4 works fine then.

I'm experiencing the same bug here. X can't start because of a version mismatch (found 2.12.0, requires 1.17.0). I can confirm that downgrading xf86-video-ati to 6.14.3-2 works. Also rebuilding 6.14.4-1 locally works.
If I had to guess xf86-video-ati is for some reason looking for non-KMS version of drm (I vaguely remember seeing similar errors back in the early KMS days). I confirmed from kernel.log that kernel is using KMS.
Anyway, looks like a build error, and it will probably be fixed in 6.14.4-2 pretty soon. In the mean while, I suggest either downgrading temporarily or building 6.14.4-1 locally.
NOTE: If you build 6.14.4-1 locally, pacman will automatically upgrade to 6.14.4-2 (or similar) when it becomes available. And it will also keep the local build until that (i.e. you can "safely" run "pacman -Syu" without fear that the "non-local" erroneous build of xf86-video-ati-6.14.4-1 will overwrite the local one).

Hi, I had the same problem after updating tonight, although managed to fix it by recompiling the package via ABS, as <strong>matse</strong> said. Works fine on the newest driver now. Don't forget to rebuild your initramfs if you're using early start KMS.

Hopefully this is just me, but there seems to be an implied accusation here. This is a bug, it's been reported, there are various workarounds available to you until it is fixed.
You're using Arch, so you should be quite happy to roll your sleeves up and get under the hood whenever it's necessary.
Offline
according to the 2 bugreports, the problem is caused because xf86-video-ati needs to be build against the same version of libdrm that will be present at runtime.
In short, if libdrm changes then xf86-video-ati needs to be rebuild. For last update both libdrm and xf86-video-ati had new versions, and xf86-video-ati was build BEFORE libdrm.
If it was build AFTER libdrm, nobody would have had any problem.
It does look like no one (or not many) were aware of this, now the archlinux community (all of us) IS.

That kind of information would have been invaluable coming from pacman before i rebooted. It's not that i mind rolling up my sleeves, half the parts in this old POS are new~newish lol. But when X's broken, wifi's broken, and youre only recourse is typing cryptic error messages into your phone, well thats' not as fun. If they were called fubars instead of updates i could at least mentally prepare myself for the journey through the gates of gre'thor.
I wouldnt object to having pacman issue warnings about such updates, or alternatively, a repo thats more stable than the current one. I thought i'd be safe from updates breaking my system when i added the LTS kernel, but after 7 years of linux they still manage to surprise me sometimes lol.
(ok so im using humour to defuse what was otherwise a shitty morning).

Just wanted to weigh in on this. Yesterday my machine broke with the same problem: "Xorg error, No server found." but I knew that if I just gave it some time the Arch guys would have it fixed Glad to see that this morning I was correct, and that the people responsible for the package now have updated knowledge on how to keep future updates stable. I'm a new Arch user, and you may think this is an odd time to sing it's praise, but I think this situation is actually a tribute to Arch and community driven rolling release software. Bugs are inevitable in all software design, what's important is how those issues are discovered and dealt with. Thanks to everyone involved in getting us ATi users back online so quickly.
