It was part of the theme.lua, I think it is a hex color with two letters at the end (EG: if your color was 111000 then 111000FF would make it transparent.) But I am not 100% sure.

I changed nothing in either of those. I to had issues with attempting to use others configs, which eventually led me to doing it myself. So it was probably a good thing.

The gmail, pacman, and calender widgets were all found here -> http://jasonmaur.com/awesome-wm-widgets-configuration. May help you.
