[SOLVED] network connection repeatedly being lost and gained

Hi,

I've just done a fresh install of Arch 64. About 1 minute after booting up, the network connection (eth0) is lost repeatedly and then regained. This makes it very difficult to use pacman. When I ping 3 packets only 1 is received.
Any idea what is causing this? I've followed the instructions on the network wiki, tried restarting the network.

Here is a screenshot I took:

Cheers,

Mark

Re: [SOLVED] network connection repeatedly being lost and gained

To what  what are you attached? Router, DSL Modem, Cable Modem?
What is the make and model of your NIC (look at the output of lspci -nn  (That is two n;s, not m)  It will give you two 4 digit hexadecimal numbers associated with your NIC card.  Please report those as well.

At this point, I always ask,"Have you checked your cables?"  You would not believe how often this fixed it big_smile

Lastly, are you using anything to manage the network? Wicd? NetworkManager?

EDIT:  BTW.. (ewaller dons his moderator hat)  In the future, if you would like to move threads, go ahead and use the report thread for the thread you want moved and leave a short note to the moderators.  We are happy to move things for you; we usually get around to reports pretty quickly.  I deleted your other thread.

Re: [SOLVED] network connection repeatedly being lost and gained

Thanks ewaller for getting back to me, nice to have helping hand with this. Well the connection works fine from Windows or other linux distros, so I assume it can't be the cable. I'm connected to my router via a cable.

I can't type the whole output of lspci -nn but I believe the line you're after is:

04:00 Ethernet Controller [0200]: Realtek Semicondictor Co, Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller [10ec:8168] (rev06)

I am not using any network managers. This is a fresh install...

Cheers for the advice on how to move threads in the future wink

Re: [SOLVED] network connection repeatedly being lost and gained

Posting at the end of my lunch break:  That card is well supported on Linux, I'm surprised you are having issues.

I assume you have not been able to run pacman -Syu since your install (you said it was difficult smile )  So, you must be running the system that was on the install disk.

Can you verify which kernel you are using ( uname -a )  ?
If you boot from the install media, does the controller work as expected?

I'll try to get back later this afternoon; If not I'll get back this evening ( GMT - 7)

I'm guessing this could potentially be the issue you're facing.
