Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@caasi: Yes and no. I don't get higher Xorg CPU usage, but I do feel like the system is kind of unstable after I suspend/resume. Without counting the times, I think applications and sometimes panels (Plasma desktop) are more likely to crash after I've resumed from suspend. It's just a general feeling though, I really can't list specific examples. I may just be paranoid.

My friend using intel card also has this problem. I really don't know what causes this problem. Here I find a bug reported.

Thanks for your efforts! However, I am still seeing the issue I just noted some days ago (also on 12.2). Here's the part of Xorg.0.log:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Another thing: is there some file I can remove so all the settings I changed in amdcccle are restored back to normal? I think that could solve my DWM issue.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

According to the Unigine Heaven Benchmark (version 2.5), I have a 18% performance drop. I have the same drop in Arch Linux and Ubuntu and not only with 12.3, but also with 12.2 and maybe one or two versions before (I did not benchmark those versions, but experienced performence drops before 12.2 in some games). The last time, I tested the Catalyst driver without performance drop was Oct 2011, so something happened between 11.10 and 12.2.

Kano in the Phoronix forums says, that the last 4 drivers are crap (meaning 11.12, 12.1, 12.2 and 12.3) so maybe this is, where my performance drop started. I don't like it, because 18% is too much.

Vi0L0, can I gently ask you if you can package Ubuntu's 12.4 beta driver?
I looked at package myself, and looks like it's too comlicated for me to make it sad

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello everyone smile

I have an ati 4670hd on my laptop and kde 4.8.1. When I switch to tear free desktop, after 15min, my laptop freeze and I have to do a hard reboot. Did you ever experienced something like this ?
Is it worth testing the beta 12.4 ? what are the changes if it doesn't support xserver 1.12 ??

thank you Vi0L0 for your amazing work ;-)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I just tested 12.4-test with Gnome Shell and at least on my set up it's worse than 12.3

I have same problem with laptop Dell 1555 with GPU ati HD4570, but freezing is random.
These behavior returned after yesterday update, but I am not sure that is relevant.
I had same behavior two or three week ago and about 2 mounth ago, but it seems that the problem has returned and is annoying.
Today my laptop froze twice while working with openoffice.
Did know some one how to debug these freezing or how to find the cause (if isn't video driver), probably openoffice?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Freezing is probably not related to Catalyst. There seem to be some persistent bugs in recent kernels:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,

I don't know if this problem is related to catalyst, but I don't get 3d acceleration after upgrading my system today. It was updated ~1-2 months ago.
I have tried putting xorg111 & catalyst in pacman.conf without any luck. (Nothing has happened, they have been put above core as suggested.)
The previous kernel was 3.2.8 with catalyst 12.1, now it is 3.2.13-1 stock kernel with catalyst 12.3.
Xorg is: xorg-server-1.11.4-1

I really don't know what I am missing here. My desktops are all laggy, GNOME starts only in fallback, KDE is not normal either.

What shall I check? revert?

edit: I cannot load fglrx, it says exec format error.
everything.log: fglrx: disagrees about version of symbol module_layout

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Again i am away from my pc and i won't be able to update packages. If there will land some not_compatible_with_fglrx kernel please use hook or daemon or generator packages (yes, they should work with linux 3.3) or just wait for my return (upcoming tuesday or wednesday).
Cheers

Maybe you can try rebuilding fglrx?

# catalyst_build_module all

should do the job, then reboot.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have tried moving back to the 3.2.8 kernel, but to no success. The same environment greeted me after reboot. I have tried there modprobe fglrx - no error messages came back, but nothing has changed. Even in the everything.log there was no sign of fglrx at the end of the file.

Now I have made a -Syu, and still nothing. I still get the same error message when trying to modprobe it. I use the AUR version and the total one. I have checked, that when the hook is ran, the fglrx module is compiled successfully. A couple of logs that I gathered:

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

It's

sudo catalyst_build_module all

, not

sudo catalyst_build_module_all

note there's no underscore before "all"

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have done it, it has finished with OK but still the acceleration is not working, the screen is lagging.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have just made a -Syu and now it is all right again. I really don't know what it was but it really scared me that I couldn't use my laptop.
Current kernel is 3.3.1-1-ARCH.
Thanks for the answers.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Does anyone know if the current open source drivers support the AMD Southern Island based cards yet?

I found the following article (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/new … lands-gpus) that seems to state that AMD have released the open source drivers but I'm not entirely sure if the changes have been incorporated into the Arch Linux xf86-video-ati package. Any help is appreciated as I would rather wait until the open source version is definitely available before trying to install Arch Linux on my new rig.

Just a quick post, my first one BTW. Just thought I should mention for all the other noobs on here : )
Today I tried to get my HDMI audio working with my laptop (ATI radeon 4200).
Long story short is I needed to add radeon.audio=1 to my my kernel line in my grub menu. (Spent all day figuring out why that didn't work)
Well the reason it didn't work is because I dual boot with ubuntu. I needed to edit the kernel line of the grub menu that was sitting  on the ubuntu partition, and success. One less headache, one more reason to not use ubuntu.

Welcome aboard! Open source ATI drivers discussed in another thread:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79509

that radeon kernel param IS only for the open source driver, right? been trying to get HDMI audio working for days now and just switched to catalyst, still no luck. i have a 4500 series, RV710. this is really getting frustrating!
