Re: Gnome not reaching destop

a screen with a sad console and a logout button

Could you possibly post a screenshot of that? Also, what's in your .xinitrc (should be something among the lines of "exec ck-launch-session gnome-session")?

Burninate!

Re: Gnome not reaching destop

Have you installed gdm? (pacman -S gdm)
After that you can edit /etc/inittab to
(1) comment the line

id:3:initdefault:

then uncomment the line

id:5:initdefault:

(2) comment the line

x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon

then uncomment the line

x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon

More info is in the wiki here and here

Fatboy,
Done. Now it doesn't go to the sad console. Is just starts the bare X desktop.

Re: Gnome not reaching destop

GCool, unfortuantely, I am unable to screenshot. (I don't know how. Comp is a CR-48. Nor "Print Screen.") Also, after modifying the inittab the sad console has gone away. I've put that line in xinitrc already.

Re: Gnome not reaching destop

Perhaps you haven't installed dbus?
You can install it and put dbus in the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf (near the end)

@ fatboy You will not have Bare X desktop when you don't have dbus.
@killingthemonkey What group packages did you install for gnome?

Re: Gnome not reaching destop

sorry for telling that but maintainers of arch repos are ... (guess who they are)
first of xf86-video-ati they should first off compile libdrm and ONLY THEN compile (package) that xf86-video-ati, what they did? they did it vice versa. result was — artifacts after startx.
now to gnome-shell topic... as prehistory: I moved some time ago from gnome-shell over awesome wm to kde. yesterday I wanted to give gnome-shell 3.4 a try.
installed from gnome-unstable repos. everything was perfect (I'm using all the possible staging and testing repos including kde-unstable, gnome-unstable) and never had any (too big) problems.
so.. I logged in to gnome-shell. it was a bit better than some time ago... but then I did: pacman -Syu and it broke that new gnome-shell which worked A MINUTE AGO!!!!!!!!!!! when I try to relogin, I only see the wallpaper, no panel, no shell, nothing, but a minute ago 3.4 was working well (!!!!! most of the packages were already 3.4.0 not 3.2.* as you could think!!!). I could still press ctrl + alt + backspace to logout (kill xserver), then I deleted all the gnome, config folders. start gnome-shell again, and see default wallpaper, STILL NO PANEL, and now that key combination to kill x server isn't working anymore, the only way to LOGOUT is to reboot with ctrl + alt + del -> reboot
then I went sleep, thought when I wake up everything gonna be fixed in the repos... but until now (over 24 hours) I saw quietly no updates according to gnome even in gnome-unstable and staging repos.
the stupid thing is THAT 3.4 WORKED WELL until some packages got updated.....................
I just have deleted gnome completely, disabled the gnome-unstable repos, now I'm installing gnome 3.2 from extra repo, and then I gonna upgrade to gnome 3.4 from gnome-unstable

p.s. don't tell me that's because I'm using *-unstable repos, I'm using them over year already, and never had a problem I couldn't fix but that no panel issue doesn't even log the errors.

I've resolved my ati problem by recompiling xf86-video-ati localy before it was fixed in repos
again to my previous post: some disabled maintainer just updated udev from 181-5 to 181-6 and guess what happens after installing it? smile)) keyboard and mouse stopped working in X and it says while booting UDEV ... [FAIL] downgrading to *-5 fixed that

I'm just wondering.. don't they try to reboot before commiting/uploading new package version to repos?

I think gnome-shell is already a part of the gnome group

@killingthemonkey Have you looked at the instructions in the wiki page for GNOME? Which method for starting gnome are you using (manual with startx or auto using gdm)?

I did not discreetly install  gnome-shell. Is it not installed with gnome?

My DAEMONS array is DAEMONS=(hwclock syslog-ng network netfs crond netprofiles dbus)

I've looked at the wiki, yes. Right now, I am using startx.

Re: Gnome not reaching destop

Could you post your .xinitrc, and /etc/inittab and ensure that consolekit is installed? Also .xsession-errors might throw some light on the problem.
Other than that I'm pretty clueless at this point tongue

.xinitrc:

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc

# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then

    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done

Re: Gnome not reaching destop

You can try to either:
(a) use only gdm by commenting the exec gnome-session line in .xinitrc, or
(b) use only startx by removing the if ... fi block in .xinitrc, changing exec gnome-session line to exec ck-launch-session gnome-session, and reverting /etc/inittab to it's original state (ie opposite of my earlier post)

Or add gdm to your daemons array after dbus.

Re: Gnome not reaching destop

try to delete all the extensions from /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions and ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions that fixed all my issues with sad face, by the way starting gnome-shell from another DE (kde) with --replace, gave me js (javascript) error, so I deleted all the extensions and it fixed all the problems. posts about dbus and gdm are bullshit, kdm starts gnome-shell without problems, so you don't need to even have gdm installed

Re: Gnome not reaching destop

Disable all the extensions using the sad face screen and then logout and log back in again and should be sorted. As a question, should your DAEMONS look a bit more like

[\code] DAEMONS=(hwclock dbus syslog-ng network netfs crond netprofiles) [\code]

with your dbus first or second? Then you could place the gdm daemon at the end.

the new gnome-shell sad face doesn't show extensions (for previous gnome-shell versions) to disable, the only way is to delete /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions and ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions I had there user-theme extension, which is for 3.4 (!!!) and I guess that caused the problem (sad face) and there was no way to disable the extension as it was in gnome-shell 3.0.4 (the last I tried before switching to kde)

omg... those arch maintainers........................ yesterday after deleting all extensions folders gs 3.4 worked... but today I see only sad face again........ I double checked and I don't have ANY extension. after every update gnome-shell stops working. respect maintainers!!!!
