Problems installing Arch on USB Key

Hi everyone,

I'm tried to install Arch Linux on my 4gb usb key for about 5 times now, but never got it working.

At package installation, i often see errors like: "bsdcpio: Failed to set default locale"
On boot process, i get: [sdb] no caching mode page present
and then:
INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/agetty"
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

Does anyone know how to fix this?
I can't even log in ...

Re: Problems installing Arch on USB Key

If I remember the wiki correctly, you should add usb to the hooks line of the mkinitcpio.conf. I think this was before the autodetect entry. Don't forget to rebuild the kernel image afterwards.

Edit: Search the wiki. "usb install".

Re: Problems installing Arch on USB Key

You have to chroot into it.

Re: Problems installing Arch on USB Key

This topic is covered in other threads, as well as in the arch wiki. Best way to learn is to read up.

Re: Problems installing Arch on USB Key

You don't need to rebuild the kernel afaik, and I can't remember having to do this. I think you only need to change the mkinitcpio.conf during installation as mentioned and it automaticaly rebuilds itsefl. But I could be mistaken?

Re: Problems installing Arch on USB Key

Larsson i think so too, because it's parsing the hooks again.
But what's my fault then?

Re: Problems installing Arch on USB Key

So, while installing Arch, put "usb" in the hooks line right after udev. The installer should rebuild the image for you. If it does not, search the wiki for chroot and mkinitcpio.

Re: Problems installing Arch on USB Key

i did that before, but i will give it a try, again.
Is partitioning by label okay? Would you make seperate partitions for /boot or /home even on a 4gb USB Key?

Re: Problems installing Arch on USB Key

I would use UUID and seperate partitions for root, boot and home. While the UUID method is generally fail-safer than labels and strongly recommended, the partitioning is up to you.
