So Libreoffice supports gtk3 but why does libreoffice-gnome depend on gtk2 also? Second, why does the right-click menubar drag not work? Third, why is libreoffice not integrating with adwaita but integrating with the gtk2 version of aldabra?

Marking solved because gtk3 implementation is still experimental.

It don't think Libreoffice supports GTK3(yet), you're mistaken. It is built using XUL(like firefox). And depends on GTK2 to integrate better with GNOME(2.xx). I don't know about the second problem.

As for the intgration, like I said, LO uses your GTK2 theme files to draw the elements(horribly). Now, GTK3 themes are shipped with both a gtk-3.0 theme and a gtk-2.0 theme, the default Adwaita has Clearlooks as a gtk-2.0 theme and a new, different gtk-3.0 theme(Adwaita).

Aldabra, however, has the Adwaita theme as a gtk-3.0 theme, and a gtk-2.0 clone made to inegrate GTK2 application better with the new GTK3 ones. So what the author actually did is just porting the Adwaita theme back to GTK2 using Murrine and the pixmap engines.

Until all the programs are ported to GTK3, the situation will remain the same. Unless you use 3rd party themes.

LibO indeed ships an experimental gtk3 interface as off 3.5.x releases (see our wiki page). I haven't seen further informations on the devel list. You may ask on the LibO user list or some LibO irc channel.

I was asking myself the opposite: why does it depend on gtk3? I, as a KDE user, have gtk3 not installed and don't want to install it just because of an experimental feature. However, I do have gtk2 installed.

Well the fact that it depends on gtk3 is important to people that use gtk DEs like xfce and gnome. Also, I think gtk3 can blend better with qt which is a plus for kde users.

I mean, it shall be left as an optdep, not an obligatory one.

By the way, xfce uses gtk2. I think that the only DE or WM currently running over gtk3 is gnome.

Cinnamon, Unity and parts of LXDE use gtk3 and many themes use gtk3. GTK3 is important.
