I have/had (until I smashed the screen) MPIO HD300 with 20GB drive.
It was ok, plays mp3 & ogg, has fm tuner etc. Too bad I was too careless with it. (mental note: lcd screens do not like to be pressed hard)

Get an iPod G3 , you can then install iPodLinux & do so much more with it,you can watch videos, new applications & games. it's pretty cool.
But the iPodLinux still doesn't support G4.
so the choice is yours.

Heya,
this is not really a recommendation since I don't own an mp3-player myself.
Like mentionned above, neuros has opensource firmware which they also support I think. However, I couldn't find the device on their site lately ... could be my fault.
For those with an archos/iriver, you're maybe interested in the rockbox-project. It is opensource firmware for these players.
greetings,
Michel

get an iAudio x5 by COWON, the guys who make the famous JetAudio software media player. Check the specs and you'll be amazed.
I don't own one but intend to. Besides, all reviews I've read about it are positive.

I second the iaudio reccomendation. I have an iaudio G3, and I absolutely love it, 1 gig of space, does everything, runs for 40-50 hours on a single aa battery, very complete package, I did tons of research and its the best in class, and I believe all their products are well made from the research i've done.

make that 3 for 3 for the iAUDIO gear. I have iAUDIO 4 which cowon (bless their little user freindly souls) have made availiable a beta firmware that adds support for ogg.
Plus it shows up as a removable drive as all iAUDIO products do. No DRM either if you find yourself in the position of having to connect it with a windows machine. Great features on the iAUDIO gear, how many mp3 players do you know have +- 10% pitch control?. Though the battery life on mine isn't what I would call great when compared to my trusty MiniDisc.
fck art, lets dance.

And I too have an iAudio G3. It's worked perfectly; the joystick is a little looser than how it came, but nothing's broken and the vinyl case it came with has done an excellent job of keeping off scratches...though lately, the only thing I have been using it for is the alarm clock, and rarely the FM radio Technology wears off, I guess...
