FN keys

I have an Asus K53SV with Gnome and my FN key for disabling my touchpad doesn't work (but it show's a notification on the screen). My keys for brightness work but they don't show any notification.
The  most annoying part is that my settings reset after restart.

Could this be fixed?

I am having similar problems wth an Asus N53SV. I had to disable mouse in gnome [1] for the touchpad to work correctly through the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf file. If I re-enable the mouse plugin in gnome-settings-daemon, Fn+F9 is able to disable/enable the touchpad, but the touchpad itself doesn't work as it should (e.g. multitouch).

Similar behavior for the brightness keys. They work but don't show any notification.

And a third problem I noticed, with both the volume and brightness pair of keys: they do work, but if you keep pressing them in regular intervals, it seems like they are interrupted, then after a little bit they do what they should (i.e. increase/decrease volume or brightness). Since the brightness keys don't show any notifications, it's easier to verify this using the volume keys. You see the volume bar decreasing/increasing, then stopping... and after a little while, they jump. It's not only the notification delayed; the actual volume change also comes after this interruption. Still didn't find a way to debug this strange behavior.

So, answering your question.. if your touchpad works fine with the mouse plugin enabled in gnome-settings-daemon, give it a try, as it might make the media key for disabling/enabling the touchpad work. I remember seeing a workaround for this that consisted of re-maping the media key combination to a script that would perform the touchpad toggle. I didn't try it, though. 

[1] through dconf-editor, then going to org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.mouse and unchecking the "active" property.

I've installed the Synaptics driver and now my touchpad works as it should, also the fn key works.

But what about the settings reset for volume and brightness after restart?

Edit: I have found a way on how to keep my brightness permanent with: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p … 12#p511521 , but now my touchpad can't be disabled and my mouse sensitivity changed.
