linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

Mods - please don't delete this thread.  I started it to allow early adopters of linux-ck in the 3.3.x tree to post issues in a place that isn't the AUR.

This thread is beneficial because:
1) It allows issues to get worked out prior to a broad release of the package series.
2) It does not bother folks subscribed to the aur page.
3) Keep the signal-to-noise ratio high in the aur page.

---

Since so many people want to start using linux-ck in the 3.3.x tree but we still don't have a stable version of BFQ yet.  So:

Re: linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

D'oh, Sorry about that, it definitely makes more sense to use the forums. Deleted my AUR comments and moved my posts here.

Not sure if it's just me, but I am unable to build a working kernel with the 3.3.0-1 source package. My server (i686; SysVInit with XFS Root) won't even compile it. My laptop (x86_64; Systemd with compressed BTRFS Root) is able to compile it, but it complains that the disk is full on any action requiring disk writes (as a result, most of my daemons fail, and I cannot launch X). This doesn't occur when touching my ext2 /boot partition and df reports that the partition isn't full. I'm using localmodconfig and nconfig (changing only the processor type and tick frequency), though the same thing happens with an unaltered PKGBUILD.

The server's compile fails with this output:

In reply to Zucca's Comment:
Temp space isn't an issue, I've got my boxes setup to handle kernel compiles. The server uses a 2 GB reiserfs partition, and the laptop uses a 3.5 GB tmpfs mount. I'm not using zramswap, so that wouldn't be causing issues either.
Would there be any odd compiler/log output if I were to run out of inodes? The server's compile abruptly stops with no erroneous output aside from makepkg saying that the build failed. The laptop only has issues under the 3.3 CK kernel, 3.2.12-1-ARCH is working normally (3.2.13-1-CK was fine too).

Failure is not an option... It comes bundled with Windows.

Re: linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

@val - Sorry dude, unless many more peeps want this patch, you'll have to add a few lines to the PKGBUILD yourself.

@dark -
1) Can you verify that you can or cannot compile the 3.3.0-1-ARCH kernel on that box?  Use ABS.
2) What happens if you attempt to compile it in /tmp?  Incidentally, I do *all* compilation in tmpfs.

Re: linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

1) Sure thing, It's compiling now and I'll post again when it's done (or fails).
2) It would probably run out of space. My home server only has 2 GB of RAM, so tmpfs isn't really an option since kernel builds have been at least a gig and I don't want to give tmpfs more than 50% of my ram (I could probably pull off a tmpfs compile if I really had to though). To be on the safe side, I just build packages on my 2 GB /var partition, which hasn't given me any problems until now.

Also, do you think it would be a good idea to downgrade the laptop to ck 3.2.13-1 (which I know to work), then try the 3.3 -ARCH kernel from testing to see if the problem lies in the new kernel or the -ck package on the other computer?

Sure, you can troubleshoot on a kernel level.  I haven't seen this issue before.  I can build you a 3.3.0-1 for i686 if needed.

Re: linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

The server compiled -ARCH 3.3 fine. I found that the output posted came at the very end of the compile on my laptop for 3.2.13, so I'll try building a clean -CK kernel and work from there to get localmodconfig and my configuration tweaks working.

The laptop's problem is probably something with its BTRFS partition, since even the -ARCH kernel had the issue. I was able to mount and write to every other filesystem I had access to, and even a btrfs-formatted loop device (to make sure it wasn't something with the btrfs module) I'm going to try a somewhat drastic fix and wipe my btrfs partition, create a new one and rsync my backup from my other drive.

So neither issue seems to be the kernel's fault.

Re: linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

Yup. The laptop's issue was definitely a messed up btrfs partition. Wiping it, recreating it and rsyncing my data back fixed the "disk full" issue and it's happily running 3.3.0-ck now.

After many compiles, I've found that the server's issue is  with the K7 processor option in kernel 3.3. (This box has a pair of Athlon MP's and this option has worked fine on past kernels)
Here's the combinations I tried:
-CK Localmod only : Success
-CK Localmod, 100Hz Timer and No Pre-empt: Success
-CK Localmod, 100Hz Timer, No Pre-empt and K7: Failed
-CK Localmod and K7: Failed
-ARCH Localmod only: Success
-ARCH Localmod 100Hz timer and no Pre-empt : Success
-ARCH Localmod, 100Hz Timer, No Pre-empt and K7: Failed
-ARCH Localmod and K7 : Failed

That is some heroic troubleshooting.  Did you or do you plan to post this to lkml?

Re: linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

I haven't yet, though it seems like a good idea. I've never posted anything to a mailing list before though, so I'm trying to figure out how I'd go about doing that.
Posted it tongue

They figured it out: EFI cannot be enabled at the same time as K7, but Kconfig doesn't prevent you from doing so, which creates a failing config file unless you disable EFI manually.

And here's the patch that makes K7 and EFI mutually exclusive: http://dbox.darksniper.tk/k7-efi-fix.patch

Re: linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

Is the latest source package supposed to be 3.3.1-1 or 3.3.0-2? I noticed that there wasn't a patch for 3.3.1 in the PKGBUILD when I was adding the k7 patch for my server and the top of Nconfig still says 3.3.0-1:

Re: linux-ck prerelease 3.3.0-1 thread - no discussion in the AUR plz

I think this is more due to my incompetence then is is -ck or 3.3.x-x itself.

I'm having trouble building a particular package called 'dolphin-emu' which is in the AUR, though I would like to know what to do when encountering a similar issue with other packages.  It uses git to clone the source/repo, and then the g++ compilation process begins.

I switched back to the default Arch kernel and built it without errors.  Are makepkg.conf settings I need to modify - or things I need to change when using the -ck kernel?

EDIT:
here's the error I receive on my i686 linux-ck-corex kernel :

[ 11%] Building CXX object Source/Core/Common/CMakeFiles/common.dir/Src/Crypto/md5.cpp.o
[ 11%] Building CXX object Source/Core/Common/CMakeFiles/common.dir/Src/Crypto/sha1.cpp.o
Linking CXX static library libcommon.a
[ 11%] Built target common
make: *** [all] Error 2

I am starting to think it may be on the sources end, because a x86_64 ck-corex desktop I am running had trouble building yesterday, but with the current revision it builds fine using the ck kernel.  Any input is still appreciated.  If it's worth anything my build system is using the nvidia drivers provided by the repo.

If interested, I took up the issue with them : http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/is … il?id=5353

@akspecs - no relation to the ck1 patch in my opinion.

I built it on another -ck system - the system that can't build is using nvidia - the system that can is using intel graphics.  I appreciate what you did there.

I'm assuming your system isn't using nvidia-ck-corex or anything nvidia for that matter.

No, it is happily using then matching nvidia package.  I'll bet that is you remove the nvidia package from your machine it still won't be able to build it.
