Best antivirus

I am creating a live USB for my personal usage, so i can plug it in any computer and use it as if it were my personal computer...
The thing is that i will also use it for recovery and forensics of windows machines.. and one of the things i need is an antivirus for scanning for malware on the windows partitions.... which antivirus dp you recommend me for this purpose?

Thanks!

Re: Best antivirus

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware has free on-demand scanning, if I'm not mistakening, but if free software is your principle, then I can't help.

Re: Best antivirus

eSet's NOD32 is said to be very good as well. Not free as in beer though, nor as in code.

Re: Best antivirus

There are a bunch of free antivirus rescue CDs offered by the major vendors.  There's a list of them in this article: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2363533,00.asp.

I don't know how adaptable they are to USB flash drives, but it should be possible – the rescue CDs are almost always based on Knoppix or Gentoo.

Do make sure that you are able to download the latest virus definitions from the CD.

It's been my experience, with friends who have teenage children or grandchildren, that one vendor's definitions won't catch all the malware.  I usually attempt to convince my friends that a fresh installation of MS windows will take much less time.

[Edit: fixed typo.]

Re: Best antivirus

My opinion.

Best= eset nod32

Free= portable clam

With any free (or paid) solution you will still probably end up needing to do research and manual work (registry / file deletions). I am sure you already knew this. It has been my experience that there is "no one size fits all" solution.

Re: Best antivirus

If you need it to be truly portable, try Dr.Web Cureit.

If installation is ok, try Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.

Re: Best antivirus

Thanks to all for the answers!
Well, indeed, i always end up deleting files manually (the virus files's names are kind of obvious usually)
I have been testing f-secure with my "virus farm"... some viruses i have downloaded intentionally (emule is a really great source of this things) and it seems to detect some of them (they are actually quite old ones, that's why i think most of them even don't appear in the definitions anymore)....
Clam AV and Avast are the ones im thinking about testing as well....
I will do something.... install the three of them, run a scan on my virus farm and see which one detects the most smile

Re: Best antivirus

Here goes my idea:
I usually use Kaspersky Rescue Disk whenever a college's computer gets raided by virus (We have windows in our company): This live CD developed and feely distributed by kaspersky labs runs on top of gentoo LINUX....
Is there a way to have the same thing in arch linux?
I have a pendrive with a Arch Linux install i use to plug on any machine wherever i go, so i can have my own desktop and personal stuff on any computer, and having kaspersky for performing a virus scan whenever i need to would be just awesome, since its the windows antivirus i trus the most.....

Re: Best antivirus

There is no such thing as a "best antivirus". I would probably encourage them to use a virtual machine, at least for the web browser, since that is probably the most common way to get a virus.

Unfortunately Kaspersky does not have any on-demand scanner for Linux.

You could always buy Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Linux. However its more of a business/enterprise product. Otherwise you could try running Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool via Wine but I highly doubt that will work.
