Demographics

Maybe this question has been asked before, but what are the general demographics of Arch users?  I see a suprising amount of geographical diversity in this forum, but I'm guessing that it's 99% male.

Re: Demographics

I would say the bulk of archers seem to be guys ranging from 18 - 30, it seems to be a slightly older crowd then the gentoo, ununtu, and redhat users. I have talked to people from all over the world in that arch chat room, I wouldn't be surprised to find that the overwhelming majority aren't American. There doesnt seem to be many females around linux at all (except debian-women) I had enough trouble just getting my sister used to running openoffice.

I don't think it was meant to be this way though, arch, and linux in general seems to want to be available to people from all walks of life but the only ones interested seem to be geeky dudes. I wouldnt want to turn anyone away just because they didn't fit with the usualy crowd, so dont take too much from my guess at who the bulk of the crowd is.

But yeah, I see mostly skinny white guys, there is also a fair amount of fatties in there though, most of them are really pasty white and scruffy looking. I worked in a university computer lab which runs red hat enterprise and it really gave me alot of time to watch the people come in and try to do stuff. One thing I shoud say about those computer labs (WASH YOUR HANDS! DONT TOUCH YOUR FACE!) so much sickness spreads via public keyboards omg. I saw mostly white guys, I saw a couple older people, really old people. Lots of girls complain that there are only 4 windows machines available, lots of freshman do the same thing. It is fun to be all heroic and solve some hot girl's computer problem, like "how do I make this print" or "how do I use this floppy". I really doubt many of those kida had a linux box running at home, you really notice the kids who are adept and using the linux because there are so few of them and they tend to visit the computer lab alot more often (Free access to a giant cluster of 3ghz machines, woot) Most of the talented linux users I have noticed are older college students doing electrical engineering or computer science.

I think my demographic observations are a but unbalanced, most of the people in engineering school who have access to those machines are guys anyway, most girls arent interested in studying that stuff in the first place but that doesnt necessarily mean they wouldn't use linux had they been given the chance. Computers in general seem to be biased towards white guys  but I am not quite sure wheter linux or arch reinforces that.
