I'm trying to replace Xfwm4 with awesome, but awesome is complaining about D-Bus:
W: awesome: a_dbus_connect:598: D-Bus session bus system failed: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
E: awesome: main:435: another window manager is already running
D-Bus is listed in the daemon array at rc.conf.

Clearly, you already have another wm running while trying to start awesome.

The same message (without the WM error) appeared when I had uninstalled Xfwm4.

How are you starting awesome? Also do you have dbus in your daemons list?

Manually for now, and yes, it is.

/var/log/boot had interesting stuff in it...
Fri Apr 6 13:01:07 2012: :: Starting D-BUS system messagebus [BUSY] Unknown username "avahi" in message bus configuration file
Fri Apr 6 13:01:08 2012: Failed to start message bus: Could not get UID and GID for username "dbus"
Fri Apr 6 13:01:08 2012: [FAIL]
After a quick google search, I found the solution for the avahi part. For the dbus (before I start trying on my own) is it
# groupadd dbus
# useradd --system -g dbus dbus
E: Yes, worked. Now onwards on the debugging. Awesome starts without warnings but doesn't show up in any way (like xfwm4 does by adding a bar on top of windows).

Awesome WAS starting, but I got confused for it being so different compared to what I am used to. Marking thread as solved.
