GDM slow start

I think I have the same problem as the guy in the following post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126371. There is a noticeable delay untill the login prompt appears (black screen with a clock cursor), but after the login executes the system works smoothly without any problems. I've tried to disable some of the daemons to see if one of them is causing the problem, but the delay remained regardless so i've checked my Xorg.0.log ad found that there are multiple redundant modline queries

So maybe this is what causes the delay. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: GDM slow start

The long delay is not happening after the login it's happening before I get to the gdm login screen. (black screen with a watch cursor)

P.S.
I don't have the PulseAudio network settings enabled, so this is not what causes the problem.

Re: GDM slow start

I've noticed that gdm3 was taking its time when I using it with my arch system (lightDM seems to take a while with my Linux Mint system too ¬¬). Since then I decided to use gdm-old from the AUR and login time is really good. I dunno whether that helps any.

Laptop: AMD A4-3305M, 4GB RAM, Archlinux 64bit with XFCE4 and Linux Mint Maya with MATE.

Re: GDM slow start

I reported this[1] bug a while ago, is it related to this issue?

Re: GDM slow start

I have the same looping modeline problem with an Intel 945GM; I just assumed that my computer and the new GDM were slow together. The modeline loop only happens at startup, but not after suspend/resume.

Re: GDM slow start

I'm seeing the same problem with latest xorg-server and xf86-video-intel.  Can anyone confirm this problem did not exist with older versions of the intel driver?  I just switched from nvidia 295.33 and xorg-server 1.12.0 and did not have this problem until now.  That makes me think this is a xf86-video-intel 2.18.0 bug.

UPDATE: Just found this comment and kernel patch from Chris Wilson.  Looks like it could be related...anyone want to try it?

Tried it myself.  Doesn't help sad

UPDATE 2:  After more googling I found this bug report and this patch from Eugeni Dodonov which does solve the problem.  The fix will appear in the 3.4 kernel.  I applied the patch to kernel 3.2.14-1 and I am seeing no lag now big_smile
