(Solved) Minecraft LAN Comp to Comp help

Hello,

I'm wanting to setup a LAN network that is basically my desktop to my wife's laptop so we can play minecraft together. I've looked around, but to be honest I'm not sure what I'm looking for entirely or at for that matter. Gaming and networking aren't my strong suits.

Would we just plug the 2 into each other or can we use our Belkin router as like a through port or something? If anyone can point me in a direction on how to get the computers talking to each other and how to set up the server for it I would very much appreciate the help.

Thank you in advance.

It's slightly easier to use a router, since it will (probably) give you IP's automagically. If you are in the same LAN, it will be really easy to get a server up. Both of you should connect to the router, and then the server should check his local IP. After this, the client can just type the server's IP to the server box at Minecraft. For setting up the server, there should be tons of tutorials. Search in Google for minecraft server or something.

Thank you.

I should have mentioned that I'm wanting to run the server on my desktop for just when we play together. Not an "always up" thing. What your saying is basically setup the server then log into it in minecraft like you would any other server on the web? I'm wanting to go computer to computer because my internet isn't the fastest and I just want to play with the wife. Is an ad hoc network the right direction?

Thank you again.

By the way, what operating systems are you using?
And yes, you don't need any internet access, the router is just to make things easier. I would recommend against an ad hoc network though, since a cable will be faster and stabler, even with a router between your computers.

Both are running Arch64. I have the server running, but now how do I find it. I'm searching, but not sure what to look for. I'm plugged into the router and she's plugged into it. We have our IP's. Now, I guess I just need to find the server, right?

Okay. I got it figured out. I'm pretty sure I stumbled into it, but it works. Thank you for everything.

Just to recap. I started the minecraftserver jar file and then just used my IP. That was it. Painfully, egg on face easy.

Changing to solved!
