resume problem after major upgrade

Hi everyone,
I just did a major upgrade on my ThinkPad T23 (really old) laptop. one of the problems (among others) I got after upgrade is that after suspending my computer (using Fn-F3), I am unable to resume! I think this has something to do with the X, because resuming works fine in the console. I use:

  sleep 5 && echo -n mem > /sys/power/state 

in my /etc/acpi/actions/sleep.sh to suspend.

any help is appreciated.
