[SOLVED] Segfaults everywhere!

Hello all,

Though this is my first post, I have used Arch frequently for the past couple of years, and overall, I am quite pleased with it. However, my latest install attempt seems to be cursed with some strange affliction.

In a nutshell, the system boots fine with no errors, I can log in without problems, network works, alsa works, X loads fine with my window manager (Awesome wm), and all my programs start without problems. And then it all works fine until it suddenly doesn't. Although I seem to have slowly massaged it into behaving better overall, I am frequently getting segfaults for almost every program I use on this system. There is no warning; no slowdowns, no strange behaviour. The program just crashes outright instantaneously.

On top of that, sometimes the kernel(?) even crashes outright and gives me an 'oops' error. One time this happened, I had music playing in MOC; I could still hear this playing in the background, so obviously stuff is still running. I also still have a moveable cursor during these crashes. But I cannot enter any keyboard input, so far as I can figure out, and I basically have to do a hard reboot to get the system running again.

I have reinstalled packages left and right (including 'base' and 'base-devel') and tried everything I can think of to solve the problem; so far, no dice. Any advice I can get would be appreciated at this stage. I could reinstall the system, but considering how much effort I have invested in it already, I am reluctant to do that unless absolutely necessary.

What follows is all the information I have so far about the problem. The worst part is that for many of the segfault errors, there is no obvious message in the terminal windows giving me a clue as to what went wrong.

Also, I am quite sure it's not a hardware problem. I ran Arch on this machine constantly about 6 months ago before leaving for a time; it basically just sat there until I got back. It's well ventilated, dry, and uses a solidly built case. I reinstalled the sytem because my attempt to upgrade at the time turned into a total dependency hell mess, and my install basically broke. My current install uses basically the newest of everything as of this week, since I did a netinstall from the x86_64 livecd. Kernel is 3.3.1-1 stock.

System specs and configuration:

Intel core i7-2600 (64-bit)
4 GB ram
160GB hard drive (boot partition (ext2), root (LUKS-encrypted btrfs))
1TB hard drive (home partition (LUKS-encrypted btrfs))
Connecting via supported wired ethernet card
NVIDIA GeForce x8600GT graphics card (seems to be set up fine)

I am aware that BTRFS is still quite new, and have been wondering if that is the source of my trouble. Data integrity seems fine, however, even after crashes.

Note I set up NO SWAP, I was of the understanding that this is acceptable, but I am wondering if this is the problem (if so, sorry for a silly mistake), but I have been watching my RAM usage and it seems well within the limits at the times of segfaults and system crashes...I set swappiness to 0 in case writing to nonexistant swap was somehow the problem, but that seemed to change nothing...

So, in short, the things that seem most suspect here are my use of BTRFS, total lack of a swap partition and use of the absolute newest packages in the install. I currently can't think of anything else to point out.

unison was also very, very crashy and segfaulty, but this was before I wised up to capturing the terminal outputs

at first my machine was frequently crashing to a black screen with a "corrupt pagefile" error and a CPU number (I presume it's associated with the multiple cores, as it was a single digit like 1, 5, etc), to the point where I had to forcefully power off the machine.  It now still does this, but far less frequently, at least.

When you do pacman do some operation along with --debug such as pacman -S glibc --debug
The top line seems to indicate maybe you don't have enough swap or swap isn't enabled?

I have been operating without any swap for a while, so this is not generally a problem. Did you do the usual things, like migrating the root partition to something not-encrypted or another filesystem? I'd also run a memtest, this is basically the first thing I do when I encounter such problems.

Buzz understands it so well. D: But it turns out, I think I've solved it. Of course, it was the last thing I thought it would be, naturally.

@ nomorewindows: I actually did the first of those with Pacman already, resulting in the debug dump for it that you can see in my code section above. I'll try the other mode if it happens again though. As for swap, yeah, I tried activating swap afterwards using a RAMswap arrangement (long story short, making room for a HDD swap partition is a not-fun task at this point), using zramswap from the AUR. I still had problems even with that though.

@ Awebb: That's what I thought, regarding swap necessity. But between that oops message and all the other things I'd tried, I was stumped for want of another possibility. I wasn't aware that migrating root like that was a 'usual thing'; where in the wiki should I look to do that, as I'd be interested to know?

You were on the right track though, it seems, as far as a memtest. I never did do one, and odds are, it would have helped me solve the problem much sooner. As far as I can tell, the problem was actually a hardware misconfiguration, though the gear itself worked fine; somewhere down the line I misconfigured my RAM frequency in the BIOS. I guess it was just a tad too low, within the threshold of usability but just short of full reliability, or something. Setting that properly seems to have resolved all the random crashing, at least so far. I can actually browse youtube again, it's glorious.

I'm going to mark this thread as solved, and count myself down three days, and ahead some arcane Linux lore and a meme.

(Remember kids, BIOS settings are fun! )
