Heat Issue with DELL Vostro 3500

Hi, has anyone of you experiences with using nvidia driver on a Vostro 3500? After a short time of doing graphic intensive work my notebook is forced to shutdown because of a temperature of 100°C. That's ugly and I never had a problem like that on Windows. I'm actually new on Archlinux. So I would be happy getting help in this issue smile

PS: I tried to use the intel driver instead of nvidia but Archlinux does not find the intel graphics chip sad

edit: my sneaking suspicion about the intel chip: dell gave me an old mainboard (without optimus support) when changing the board by a technician o0

Re: Heat Issue with DELL Vostro 3500

der.ralle,

It sounds like your CPU is operating at full speed all the time, which quickly causes it to overheat. I suggest installing cpufrequtils and using information from the Wiki to configure it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cpufreq

Re: Heat Issue with DELL Vostro 3500

hmm... good idea, but I did use cpufrequtils yet, but without success sad I think, if no one has another idea to solve my problem, the only solution will be to check the heat-conductive paste although I'm afraid to do that with a notebook hmm but there is the possibility that a technician send by dell has been frouzy

some additional infos:
I use the nvidia driver
I'm not really sure, which temperature ist rising up to 100°C (gpu or cpu)
in the meantime I rembered, there was a simliar problem on win7 as well (when using silverlight)

Re: Heat Issue with DELL Vostro 3500

have you read the wiki on bumblebee?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee
it could be that your nvidia card is running all the time, that was the problem with mine...
