Hi guys,
With Sud_crow recently submitting his Spanish translation of the Jacman GUI labels, it reminded me to do something that I wanted to do for a while... an appeal!
Jacman has support for simple integration of locale-specific text for its interface. Natually, English was the first to be supplied. Sud_crow simply translated my English file to generate the Spanish version.
I'm hoping to attract other users who could translate my English reference file to alternative languages.
The file can be found here.
The lines beginning with the hash (#) are comments, so you can translate them if you wish. Lines like this:
JacmanFrameMenuFileQuit = Exit
Represents means the Quit item, on the File menu found in the main Jacman Frame. What follows the equals sign (=) is what actually appears on screen. So don't worry too much about the text on the left - it should not be changed. The text on the right is the important part, and so replace with an appropriate, and concise translation.
Feel free to ask for any explanation of terms if necessary.
Many thanks

I finished the Traditional Chinese Translation, just need to test it with jacman to be sure that I didnt misunderstand any meaning.
And I suppose that the translation shold be in UTF-8, rite?
Anyway, the jacman is really a nice piece of program, tks for this..

I'll make a Polish translation

Chinese translations are tricky. Basically, there's a silly limitation in Java's i18n support that means that the files containing the translations need to be in a simple ascii format!
There's a utility shipped with the JDK called native2ascii. As I recall, it assumes input is unicode, although encoding can be specified. So, you need to pass your translation through this before it can be used by Jacman.
If you need help, let me know.
Thanks a lot for your contributions

I see there aren't many translatable strings. (for now, atleast ),
but, unfortunately, I'll be away for a month or so.
But you can expect a Greek translation shortly after (if noone do it in the mean time).
I just wonder if it is possible to use gettext for the translations managment. From a translator's POV it makes sence as editing the .po file is quicker, less error-prone and is easier to manage.
Its your decision, of course.

Most appreciated.

I've never tried gettext (isn't that for c/c++ anyway?) Java's way is through ResourceBundles. These have locale suffixes and .properties extension. Now, if you prefer the format of .po files - whatever they should be - perhaps I could look into a method for converting between one and the other. Although, I'm completely ignorant of gettext and .po files, so I don't know what the format is.
I'll look into it. I have a month...

I'll make a Finnish translation as soon as I have time, most probably during the following week.
Just your basic anime otaku some might even call nijikon.

It is mainly for c/c++ , but it can be used in many other programming and scripting languages. Anyway, do what you please ;-)

Thanks for that.
Out of interest, was there a reason why those labels couldn't be translated?

For the 1st one and 3rd one : the strings are not listed in the JacmanLabels.properties file so they cannot be translated.
For the second one : The description labels are in the JacmanLabels*.properties files but they are not used. Probably the strings are hard-coded in the code.

Oops! I haven't checked but I'm sure you're right. Dang. I'll need to fix that.

Hmm... again, I'll have to check.
Thanks for highlighting these issues.

Ok folks, it's that time again. Version 0.3 is in its closing stages. There's still some tidying up to do, but the strings will not change for this release.
The translation file can be found here
If any one would like to help and translate this file for your language, then please have a go and the Jacman team will be eternally grateful. I can't offer any reward other than your name appearing in the Acknowledgements of the About Jacman dialog. Plus you get the self-satisfaction of working on the greatest Pacman GUI, ever!

Only one submission so far. Any last minute attempts gladly welcome - hoping to package up tonight providing last bit of code goes in smoothly.

I'm currently translating another app, but this will go fast ;-)
