GRUB2 fails to start in graphics mode and messes up linux boot

Hi all,
I have a fairly recent machine with a Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4 motherboard, it has two disks, which respectively boot grub2->linux or chameleon/chimera->OS X.

Everything worked fine until the latest grub upgrade, then I had some configuration problems (it looked like my hand-made config was now incompatible in some way), so I decided to have a go at grub-mkconfig. I configured /etc/default/grub with GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080x32 and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep, so I could use my monitor at full resolution, launched "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" and finally I rebooted.

Now every time I get to the "Welcome to GRUB!" message the system automatically reboots. Chimera continues to work fine, and I can boot a recovery system from USB. I googled a lot and found many people suggesting to set up grub in text-mode only, and this worked. What happens now, though, is my monitor goes full screen, but text is limited to 1024x768, and the same limitation appears in GDM. Worst of all, when I log in the resolution goes to fullhd, but apparently gnome-shell cannot cope with it and I just see the background.

I tried to set GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX to 1920x1080x32 but it doesn't help, and every time I try to enable graphics everything just dies before the grub prompt, even with lower/automatic resolutions.

Did anybody experience the same problem?

Have you tried the "auto" options and just see if grub can figure it out on its own?
