Little troubles with DVB-S2 via MPlayer

Hi,

I use the MPlayer already for quite a while to stream DVB-S and DVB-S2 with it. But for approximately two weeks something changed while watching HD-channels: the video track lags every few seconds; the audio track is quiet normal. However, the non-HD channels hide the problem.

E.g. while watching a German HD-channel, I find following terminal outputs:

Specially this message I can't understand, because I'm using a CPU AMD Phenom II X4 955 3,2 GHz, 8 GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 RAM and the graphic card ASUS GTX 460 Top GDDR5 PCIe 1024 MB. But, let's continue with the outputs:

Furthermore I'm using two HHD WD20EARS, which are connected to RAID1 via 3ware 9650SE-2LP, and the DVB hardware decoder card Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-HD-S2. My desktop environment is KDE SC 4.8.

For starting the DVB-S2 streaming I use szap-s2 -r -p -S 1 -c ~/.mplayer/hdchannels.conf "NAME-OF-THE-HD-CHANNEL" in one terminal and mplayer /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 -demuxer lavf -cache 8192 in a second terminal.

I just mention all this stuff because I've absolutly no idea, what could be the reason. Before this troubles started, two weeks ago, everything worked flawlessly. Checking the /etc/log/pacman.log I can find out, that the Linux kernel was upgraded from 3.2.6-2 to 3.2.7-1 on 24th February. I'm not sure, but maybe since that time these failures appears. Presently I'm using Linux 3.2.8-1.

Has anyone an idea what might just be the cause? (Perhaps it could be a option to try the LTS-kernel?)

It's funny you should bring this up. Just yesterday I was watching some Over The Air (OTA) television broadcasts here in the USA (which uses ATSC) and MPlayer was spewing errors similar to those... including the bogus "Your system is too SLOW to play this!" message.

In my case it was simply corruption of the data that was reaching my antenna. I know this because I had my flat screen TV tuned to the same station, but it was getting the signal from my cable TV provider, and it too was having video problems (block pixels). Also, since I'm using a simple "rabbit ear" antenna on my computer TV tuner, I get these types of errors (too) often when I'm recording a show.

I've yet to find a Linux player that can recover as gracefully as my TV. But, in my opinion, MPlayer is one of the worst. VLC and Xine seem to do a (slightly) better job recovering from a corrupt stream... but they are still far from ideal.

Anyway, the problem may originate in your input signal and isn't necessarily a Linux problem... but I may be completely wrong (again).

Okay, but I receive the transmissions via satellite. Furthermore I'm not convinced that the reason is originated by bad or faulty input signals, because all the non-HD-channels are receivable almost flawless. That's why I suppose the cause somewhere inside Linux.

So, today I just made some small tests. First of all I tried to start a HD-channel with WinTV7 on Windows 7: The channel was streamed correctly for almost one minute and than it was lost - and I had no possibilty to get it back.

After that I tried again to start the same HD-channel on Linux. I apologize in advance to the large amount of text but following is the terminal output of the first minute (finally canceled by STRG + C):

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
  - Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
  - Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
  - Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
  - Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
    e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
  - Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
  - Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
  - Try -nocache.

I will not get rid of the feeling that it might actually be due to faulty input signals. May something's wrong with the satellite system (LNB, multi switch, something else)?

Chuckle... a satellite signal is not infallible. For example, just as I was writing this, ESPN started block pixelating on my TV (before it finally went completely black) right in the middle of the Big East college basketball championship tournament; and I think my cable provider get's it's ESPN feed from a satellite. But that's neither here nor there, as we're not talking about my crappy cable.

To check the input signal quality, you might try killing all applications that use the TV tuner, then fire up one of the *zap command line programs found in the linuxtv-dvb-apps package. Use it to tune to one of the stations that's giving you problems... or perhaps you need to use szap-s2 for your DVB-S2 stations????

I'm not sure about the snr-values but the bit error rates and uncorrected block errors seem to be okay, right?

I'm having the same problem. For some reason it got worst about two weeks ago. I'm wondering whether the problem is in mplayer, or in the decoding library (h264). I suspect it's the library. I'm pretty sure the problem stems from a bad signal - for example it starts when a cell phone operates near the antenna. Unfortunately after such a phone call - I have to restart mplayer.

I'm looking for parameters which could improve the library operations, but I haven't succeeded yet at finding the right ones.

Can anybody tell me something about the snr-values?

Today I tried to use another kernel - therefor I installed the linux-lts-package and started again a HD-channel via MPlayer, using Linux 3.0.23.

But, unfortunately nothing changed. I still get the known signal states and error messages.

So, meanwhile I'm totaly convinced, that there's something wrong with the input signal. But, why it changed approx. two/three weeks ago? The satellite system is mounted for 10 years, until three weeks ago without any problems.

Short Update: Since yesterday, there are also problems with SD-channels - using Linux 3.2.14.

It seams, that the DVB-S fault, which I reported yesterday, was a cause of some changes inside Linux 3.3 or earlier. Finaly, after building a patched Vanilla Kernel, SD-channels are running.

But, DVB-S2 is still unusable.
