gnome-tweak-tool shows that I have the gnome-shell-extension-user-theme extension installed and I can turn it on and off, but it has no effect. I still can't choose a theme. The exclamation mark next to the drop down selector is still active when the extension is on. Any idea what might be wrong?

Yes, AFAIK it's not compatible with the recent version of Gnome-Shell. Or something like that is what I had when I last used Gnome-Shell on Fedora.
You can change the theme through dconf-editor or wait till the updated Gnome-Shell drops from [testing]

Assuming you are already using Gnome 3.4, has a fix:
# cp ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/user-theme@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com/org.gnome.shell.extensions.user-theme.gschema.xml /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas
# glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas Worked for me.

@alexcortes and @Unia, Is it just me or do things seem a little discombobulated now with both gconf-editor and dconf-editor in the mix? Why not just keep one *-editor? It seems like this and many other little "issues" would be easier to catch with just one *-editor. What's the point of two?

Here's a simple explanation why both exist: http://askubuntu.com/questions/91403/wh … f-vs-dconf

Well yea I agree, but atm it's not going to happen. Anyway, since GS won't work with Catalyst for now I resorted to DWM and try to avoid all the gconf/dconf stuff. Works quite well ![]()

@Unia, hey, catalyst works fine with Compiz. I've enabled Gnome Classic (Fallback) mode with Compiz and it's very nice, just like was my experience with Gnome 2. @trusktr showed me how to re-enable all the hidden features Gnome 2 (the Classic features) in Gnome 3.
