After upgrade nvidia driver and reload the driver I have to disable kde desktop effects because of NVIDIA drivers, i think.
There are no errors or warnings in logs.

This version of the driver also fails with gnome.
Downgrade to the previous version fixes the problem at the moment.

But leaves you very vulnerable. Attackers can gain root access. That's why 295.40 exists.

@ChemBro root access? Where is more info about that ?

Security vulnerability CVE-2012-0946 in the NVIDIA UNIX driver was disclosed to NVIDIA on March 20th, 2012. The vulnerability makes it possible for an attacker who has read and write access to the GPU device nodes to reconfigure GPUs to gain access to arbitrary system memory. NVIDIA is not aware of any reports of this vulnerability, outside of the disclosure which was made privately to NVIDIA.

Yep 295.40-2 broke my gnome too, I had to downgrade to 295.33 luckily it was still in cache. This means downgrading kernel too...

But if the driver is unusable with some chipsets...
Can you confirm it works for you and on what chipset please?

Nope. I'm using AMD/Radeon. I cannot confirm it. Was only here to inform the OP, that there is a security issue.

295.40 works fine here on both a Geforce Go 6600 and a Geforce GTS450. I don't use KDE or Gnome though. But general opengl stuff (games) works.
ChemBro is fully correct though, the main point of 295.40 is to fix security vulnerabilities. So if you're going to be using earlier drivers, at least patch them, patches are available: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=178006

All 5 work perfectly fine with 295.33 . (Yes) , I know about the security concerns that caused the packagers to Rev or patch the driver . Nvidia Bug Time ....
Things that do Not work with 295.40
Assusltcube
XBMC (a must have)
Wine
Virtualbox (need for work)

I had problems with KWin compositing after upgrade to 295.40. I solved it by switching compositing type from OpenGL to XRender; performance seems a bit worse but at least the desktop is usable. I have a 8800 GTS 320.

i have terrible FPS drops in quake3 arena after nvidia update

KDE becomes unusable - response times about 1 minute after mouse click - on my PC with nviidia 7050 / 630a onboard chipset with version 295.40 and kernel 3.3.
295.33 / kernel 3.2 was ok.

Same here. With 295.40 Kwin compositing is unusable on GeForce 7100/nForce 630i.
