Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

Hello, I hope someone can help me.

I wanted to compile my own kernel, to try. In my menu.lst, I just copy/past the actual entry for archlinux, and change the kernel location :

/boot/grub/menu.lst

# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/53826478-59d7-4de6-9217-63638d67ca24 ro radeon.modeset=1 radeon.agpmode=8 radeon.gartsize=32 quiet
initrd /initramfs-linux.img

# (0) Arch Linux

kernel /kernelFlo root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/53826478-59d7-4de6-9217-63638d67ca24 ro radeon.modeset=1 radeon.agpmode=8 radeon.gartsize=32 quiet
initrd /initramfs-linux.img

# (1) Arch Linux

kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda8 ro

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

Try generating a separate initramfs for your custom kernel.

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

Something like that ?

sudo mkinitcpio -g initFlo /dev/sda

and then

# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,6)
kernel /kernelFlo root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/53826478-59d7-4de6-9217-63638d67ca24 ro radeon.modeset=1 radeon.agpmode=8 radeon.gartsize=32 quiet
initrd /initFlo

I got that

?ui=2&ik=f4cc337d81&view=att&th=136ba3afbd20e9c9&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=1399392073647390720-1&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P_2Lqf0Ys4PuLfB12wsWCz5&sadet=1334564382903&sads=5BZA1LTHsc2ij4Qh_U2iNjXxc1I&sadssc=1

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

"mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initFlo.img -k kernelFlo" should do the trick. Wiki page for more info.

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

I did :

 mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initFlo.img -k /boot/kernelFlo

because the following

 mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initFlo.img -k kernelFlo

gave me that :

==> ERROR: '/lib/modules/kernelFlo/' is not a valid kernel module directory

But I got the same error as before

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

So now your  bootloader entry looks like:

# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,6)
kernel /kernelFlo root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/53826478-59d7-4de6-9217-63638d67ca24 ro radeon.modeset=1 radeon.agpmode=8 radeon.gartsize=32 quiet
initrd /initFlo.img

And you get that string of characters when trying to boot from it?

Can you post the output of "lsinitcpio -a /boot/initFlo.img"?

You seem to be missing quite a few things there. Doublecheck that you have the correct hooks configured in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and then regenerate the custom initramfs again. Perhaps compare it with the hooks you have in /boot/initramfs-linux.img to get a quick idea of which ones you'll need.

"-k kernelFlo" needs to be "-k /boot/kernelFlo". The -k option expects either a kernel name (e.g. 3.3.2-1-ARCH) or a path to a kernel image in /boot.

Gcool wrote:

Such as? lsinitcpio only lists hooks which have a runtime component. Most don't. It's entirely possible to boot a simple single-disk root with only udev as a runtime hook. Things like sata, scsi, usbinput, filesystems, etc have only a build hook.

Ah ok, didn't know that (was under the impression that all included hooks would be listed). Thanks for clarifying that.

I did

 mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initFlo.img -k /boot/kernelFlo

But it didn't work (Well, I got the same thing as what was on the last screenshot)

And for exemple,

 lsinitcpio -a /boot/initramfs-linux.img

give me that :

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

Then /boot/kernelFlo doesn't exist? mkinitcpio will not give you the same error as what you posted above when you pass a path to the -k option.

Sorry, with « It didn't work », I was meaning that I'm always stuck with the kernel panic.

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

Kai23,

It looks like your kernel and/or initrd image were built without support for your HDD controller driver. What is the output of lspci -k when booting from a working kernel or LiveCD?

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

Kai23,

It looks like the kernel does have support for your HDD controller after all, with the AHCI driver being compiled into it. What seems to be the issue in my opinion is that the new kernel doesn't find the root partition by its sda8 name. I suggest modifiying your fstab to include this line:

/dev/disk/by-uuid/53826478-59d7-4de6-9217-63638d67ca24 / ext4 noatime 0 1

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

I'll try it, but I know that

# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,6)
kernel /kernelFlo root=/dev/sda8 ro radeon.modeset=1 radeon.agpmode=8 radeon.gartsize=32 quiet
initrd /initFlo.img

Doesn't work.

And what effect does /etc/fstab have before root is even mounted? Surely, you wanted him to use the UUID in his bootloader config, not his fstab... still, not the problem, but he isn't trying too hard either.

What hooks are in your mkinitcpio.conf? This image looks like its missing some modules, but your initramfs-linux isn't which I don't understand.

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

Hello,

Here is my mkinit.conf

# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
MODULES="radeon"

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run first, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries used in a given hook.
# (Existing files are NOT overwritten if already added)
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=""

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
# Some users may wish to include modprobe.conf for custom module options
# like so:
# FILES="/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf"
FILES=""

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS="base"
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"
#
## This is identical to the above, except the old ide subsystem is
## used for IDE devices instead of the new pata subsystem.
# HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS="base udev pata scsi sata usb filesystems"
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS="base udev pata mdadm encrypt filesystems"
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
# HOOKS="base udev usb lvm2 filesystems"
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems usbinput fsck"

# COMPRESSION
# Use this to compress the initramfs image. With kernels earlier than
# 2.6.30, only gzip is supported, which is also the default. Newer kernels
# support gzip, bzip2 and lzma. Kernels 2.6.38 and later support xz
# compression.
#COMPRESSION="gzip"
#COMPRESSION="bzip2"
#COMPRESSION="lzma"
#COMPRESSION="xz"
#COMPRESSION="lzop"

# COMPRESSION_OPTIONS
# Additional options for the compressor
#COMPRESSION_OPTIONS=""

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

Seems to me like you're missing support for the filesystem in your kernel. There's a million possibilities given the 'custom kernel' element of this.

Re: Kernel Panic strikes again ( VFS : Unable to mount root fs )

But I added ext2, ext3 and ext4. Pretty sure of that.

Pretty sure? Why not check/post the config....
