kernel panic

I have reisntalled arch on mi laptop together with debian and windows.
I went to the install and then chosen not to install grub as I had the old arch in the menu.lst file (i reinstalled arch in the same partition and checked that everything correspond.
after i reboot and load the arch kernel i get the message:
Freeing unused kernel memory: 276k freed
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

and the system freezes.
I have noticed that, unlike the other install of arch on the same laptop and my desktop, after the install i dont have the diag1.img file in the boot directory of my newly installed arch.
any suggestion of how to solve the issue?

Well, more info would be a good start. How about your partition table, and your grub menu.lst? Also, are you using devfs or udev?

use the install disc and chroot into your system then do:

cd /dev
mknod -m 660 console c 5 1
mknod -m 660 null c 1 3

the partition table and the data on the grub menu.lst file seems to be ok.
one weird thing is that I have accessed the arch partition using the other linux system i have sinatlled and there seems to be alot of stuff missing.
I just have bin, boot, etc, home, lib, sbin, tmp. usr and var.
opt root sys udev are missing.
I also thought of a bad burn but I used tha same arch disk to install several times.
I tried to reinstall all over and the result is identical.
I also tried to chroot but get the error /bash/bin no such file or directory

problem solved (partially0 that means I reinstalled arch once again and it went fine.
one thing i have noticed is that in the previous unsuccessful installs i didnt have any content in the config files whle this time they were normal.
