Hi,
Quake 3 Arena Sources was relased. To download sources try this :
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/source … source.zip
I would like to apply developers. Can you make package of package of this piece fantastic game ? Thanks a lot.

Well, it's not the whole game... that's just the engine.
Offline
Well it's the entire game, if you have the datafiles (own the game).
Offline
so...not the entire game at all then

I dont think that the images, sounds and maps are what matters here, the important thing is that the engine got GPL'ed, and by doing that, they are making the source free for anyone to use with any graphics thay wish... mod the game, create a new one... whatever... its a lot more interesting than just having a 'game for free download'.

That's very true... but it also doesn't make sense to make a package out of it in that state.

It does if someone owns the game and wants to just copy the datafiles off the CD

Lets face it, the Q3 engine is past it's prime. The procedure of opening the source code took ages due to legal issues and now the engine is little more than a programming example. ET uses this engine (a modified version) and it's pushing the limits of what this is capable of. No new open source super games will come from this code release until some major enhancements are made.

I have to disagree here, i used to be a game lover, left it with windows (although from time to time i go to the dark side to try some) and you cant compare Q3A to today games in Windows, but in Linux the only game similar to this engine capabilities is CUBE, if you are talking about Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, its closed source, so it doesnt matters if its reaching the engine limits, as thats no where near from what free software is! I mean, Cube is alright, but its not that known and i dont think is as stable and tried as its Q3A engine. Ofcourse that there are much better game engines, like Doom 3's, but you are not seeing its source code in a long time.
Anyway, i think it opens a lot of posibilities to those willing to improve or modify code, but dont have the time to create something from scratch... again, i think its something real good for companies to do, it keeps the game alive, and the free software community happy.

I've built a package for Quake3 from the quakesrc.org svn server:
quake3-svn 9-2

To be honest, I think most people that use linux, hardly have the hardware to run Doom3 the way it was meant to be played anyway. Quake 3 demo doesn't even run on my system so i'm not crying. I was far more impressed with UT anyway, and I hardly believe that game will be available for free. I've only played UT on a mates windows machine. Infact UT inspired me to buy UT2004, which I believe is good, although that game ran faster in windows than it does in linux.
So getting back to my point, the Q3 source may be usefull if someone can do something with it. Otherwise it's just source, one of the ingrediants, thats just sitting there waiting for the right chef to come along and bake a morsel. Why does graphics have to be the primary ingrediant in gameplay anyway?

Doom3 is full of eyecandies and it's scarrier A LOT. Well, you can't simply compare UT and D3 or Q3, they're different types of FPS games.
UT was a really good game, but the people at Epic Games doesn't seem to be GPL-likely, well, all the iD Software's games source code is released someday (from Wolf3d to the recent Quake3), that's really a good thing.
Lots of things are going to happen from now under the Quake3 source, all the indie game development community seems to like all this stuff, and yes, I like that too.
Look at the Quake and Quake2 improvements, you have lots of eyecandies on QuakeWorld, FuhQuake, QuakeForge, bla bla bla. Not only graphics stuff, it also opened the door to many other projects using those GPL'd engines, like miniracer, etc.
And releasing the Quake3 source as GPL, you can see how a professional game's source looks. It's very useful for people starting on the game development area. I really can't wait to see how ugly is the Doom3 code, I've heard it uses only C++! Maybe in something like eight years we can take a look at that ![]()

Thanks, venox. I've used your package (not the binary, but the stuff off AUR), and copied the pk3 files (as you can see they're loading in the init) - any idea why it's not running for me?
-=removed log for space conservation=-
edit:
Well, for some reason my Quake3 CD didn't have all the necessary pk3 files. My Q3 CD only contained pak0.pk3 and pak1.pk3, for whatever reason, instead of pak1 - pak8, which the demo installer off the ID ftp site provided. With all 9 pk3 files there, it works like a charm, so give that a try, anyone who's having the same problem as I.

Ahhhhh..... the pk3's on my CD are outdated. That explains it, then. Good to know, thanks venox.

you think wrong, I've played doom3 on my previous laptop (which is almost 5 years old now) on linux with full details.
