When I insert a usb pendrive, it is recognized promptly and is shown in thunar file manager. However, when I right click on it and select 'eject volume', it gives following error message on one of my computers with Arch:
Failed to eject medium; one or more volumes on the medium are busy.
On other computer, it is promptly unmounted and is safe to be removed. What could be causing this problem. I have recently (only today) updated with 'pacman -Syu' but the problem is still persisting.

Try checking with "lsof" to see which process is still using your pendrive.

lsof shows multiple entries of following lines:
tumblerd 899 abcd 17r REG 8,17 1131574 48 /media/KINGSTON/own/medrchap1.mov
source:sr 899 926 abcd 17r REG 8,17 1131574 48 /media/KINGSTON/own/mecdrhap1.mov
This program is automatically accessing the movie files on the usbdrive.

Ok, so that's the issue right there. Tumblerd is still accessing that media file on your pendrive and hence you can't unmount it. Killing the process will solve that.
A quick Google search lead me to this bug report.

I went though following references but cannot understand why it is behaving this way on this computer and not on the other Arch computer?
Also, if I kill once, it may come up again. Apparently, this program comes as a default with xfce, so it must be important. Is there no way to cure this problem?

A few weeks ago I ran into this same problem, and the workaround I found was to disable the thumbnails view in Thunar's preferences. Since then I can unmount any usb pendrive in a proper way.

Thanks. I hope this problem is sorted out in next version of Thunar.

There has been an extensive discussion on the Arch bugtracker as well on this topic. Most people (myself included) have now found a solution that both gives us thumbnails AND let's us unmount out USB sticks
I suggest you dig up that bug ticket by yourself and read, it should give you an understanding as to what is going on. Good luck

Needed this myself and dug it up:

Worked like a charm, thanks.
