Gigatebyte Motherboard, Intel AHCI and Grub / Grub 2 booting problems

I fixed this but thought I would put it here for anyone who had similar problems. AHCI mode with my SSD would freeze Grub and Grub 2 but would work fine with Windows 7 bootloader. If I enabled IDE mode in my bios, linux would load but this would slow down my SSD performance.

In the bios there was a third option for software raid function (xRaid or something similar). Enabling this fixed my issue and grub loads fine into both Win 7 and Linux. I do not have any EFI enabled.

Re: Gigatebyte Motherboard, Intel AHCI and Grub / Grub 2 booting problems

I had an issue with (Nvidia?) AHCI on a Zotac mobo, but I think Windows had the problem.  Using the RAID option 'solved' it.  Generally the RAID option of an AHCI chipset enables all of the features of AHCI.  Intel actually recommends using RAID mode over AHCI mode with their chipsets.[source]

But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.

Interesting. Oddly enough, Raid mode didn't work when I first installed Windows 7 so I thought I could only use AHCI or IDE. Doesn't help that the instructions that came with my motherboard were of that particularly bad Chinese/English translation.

Can you try (do not forget the other grub-install optiosn like --boot-directory, device etc.)

grub-install --disk-module=native

or

grub-install --disk-module=ahci

Both those options made it worse. Now I cant boot even in IDE mode. Time to do another recovery .

No  i could not boot into grub at all. Fixed it by going back to software raid mode after reinstalling grub using normal settings
