I've noticed that my media keys aren't working in mate (although this seems to be a generic problem with other distros too). Volume keys work though...

EDIT: I have since dealt with the volume problem in Mint by installing mate-settings-deamon-pulse. The gstreamer doesn't seem to improve anything. Now to port it over to arch...

I can't thank you enough for this thread. Have tried XFCE,KDE, GNome, LXDE and i couldn't find a replacement for the good old Gnome 2 which I love so much ...

@pyarch you can set up KDE to something like GNOME 2, however it is a bit cumbersome at times (I have this on my Linux Mint KDE setup). mate does kickass, although I was wondering whether any updates are comeing to the arch branch of the mate-desktop.org repo.

Recently it has been upgraded from 1.1.0 to 1.2.0, though I am not sure what was updated...

Mate 1.2 has been uploaded for i686 and x86_64. Have a couple of tweaks to make on the x86_64, but those packages will be fully updated shortly.

Thanks. It is worth the wait before getting the updates, as updating mate in Linux Mint is a right nightmare.

If you want the latest version, then all hell lets loose in Linux Mint. I found I had to remove everything related to mate (I mean everything!) and then battle through a dependency hell which is a massive guessing game. It's because synaptic marks the stuff in the mint repo, not the tridex repo, which causes more than a few dependency errors if you don't correct it as you go along. If you just want mate, then it's fine.

Most probably, although I've decided to wait until Ubuntu Precise comes out before I mess around with anything Debian again (there's also a few issues with segfaults which require a reinstall because it would appear that my Mint KDE with mate setup isn't too happy, so there's another reason there.)

Getting rid of mate in Archlinux is also a nightmare...

I honestly do not see the point behind this project, its a copy of gnome2 , what does it offer me? just another useless addition to the already
spread-ridiculously-thin / everyone making their own thing / no one working together to make software that could compete with commercial softwares
that is the linux desktop software community.

Sorry, I just dont see the point, I'd rather just use Gnome if I wanted Gnome, rather than use Gnome except called Mate. Name change only, not much benefit there.

*Edit* Btw, is there a package group for Mate? That would make adding / removing this thing much easier (i.e. there is such groups for gnome)

I was and still am happy with GNOME 2, seeing as I haven't managed to break it in the time that I've used Linux, unlike most other interfaces (especially KDE and GNOME 3). Seeing as GNOME 2 is not really available anymore, I'm happy with mate as I am familiar with it and haven't broken it yet, even though it is still really in development.

Try to install just "mate" instead of "mate-desktop". There should also be a "mate-extra" or "mate-extras" group as well if you are using the repo.

I think that there is are `meta-packages' (excuse the Ubuntu terminology) for installing them in one go, namely `mate', `mate-extras' and `mate-extras', but removing them leaves everything else unless you get the remove to `cascade' onto the packages listed in the meta-package. That's what I did accidentally to remove the whole of `texlive-full' in Ubuntu once ¬¬

I instantly dropped Gnome 3 for Mate the moment I learnt of it (yesterday). Why not GTK* --> MTK*? Unless MTK* diverges from GTK*, MTK* could 'provide' GTK* (and the same with other Gnome packages converted to Mate packages).

Someone good at packaging should put all the current Mate packages in AUR so we can vote them into the official repos...

Yes it is, as I have done it successfully in the past (we are talking about 6 weeks ago, before removing Windows and formatting the whole hard disk). I will ask though, which login manager are you using? I was using gdm3 with that set-up, although I'm pretty sure that they would all work.

Also, LMDE currently default installs (and runs off of the live .iso) with both Mate and Cinnamon together. So that certainly suggests it should not be a problem. I thought this was the whole idea of Mate anyway? To rename the packages so that it does not conflict, and therefore can run side by side, with Gnome 3.

Ah yes, that conflict. I'm pretty sure that the package that conflicts with zenity can replace it, although it is a while since I ran the combination on Arch.
