Hello world!

I'm back after three years trying other distros. First time I wasn't quite ready to arch, but now I hope I should cope better. By the way, living without rolling releases was a nightmare!

Just wanted to say thanks to all the devs and users who have helped with Arch. Just moved to it and I must say, fantastic - I love it! So much faster than my previous binary distro.

Welcome to Arch. We have a Official Hello Everyone thread - you can ask a mod to merge this.

Have a good look around the boards and the wiki - one of Arch's standout strengths is the outstanding documentation the community has provided. Don't be shy about adding to it.

Hello everybody,

I've been a Linux user for all of a month now, and have ended up here with an Arch/openbox installation.... I'm loving every second of it. Trying to get everyone at work to convert to some flavor of Linux as well; we're a 100% Windows shop.... need to change that.

I'm Paul. I recently picked up an HP Folio. A quick web search led me to this fine establishment. A quicker glance at the wiki led me to give Arch a spin. Thanks to sultanoswing and etc. I have a system up and running with KDE.

I look forward to getting to know Arch and hopefully contributing where I can.

Hello everyone! As with all others who post here (for the most part) I am a 'newbie' to these parts of the interwebs and Arch Linux. I have been using Linux for roughly a year and a half, various distros from time to time. I have finally decided to man up and give Arch Linux a try, I would also like to try a WM, any good recommendations on a WM for a newbie such as myself?

Hey everybody ! Well, I'm just a normal newbie here.

Perhaps the main difference from what I read from others is that I'm not working in/with computers or anything (I'm a transportation worker), I'm just a "basic" user that just needs to watch his movies and check his mail by night. But I love to learn and I am exigent about the tools I use, so that's what drove me to Arch Linux.

I started using GNU/Linux with Ubuntu a few years ago. Something like one year ago, I switched my main computer to Debian Testing (keeping a netbook with Ubuntu). And then, for a few reasons I switched to Arch Linux a month ago. The trigger reason was Network Manager not working anymore with my WPA wireless connection and the lack of a good (and documentated) deamon for wireless connection without NM, both things found with NetCFG and the awesome Arch Wiki. I think with this prior Linux experience I had just the bottom knowledge for starting using Arch (I know the basic Unix commands, I know how to edit a file and I'm not afraid in front of a Terminal)

So yeah, thanks to this wiki, I went throught installation and configuration without any problem, everything works fine. I'm happy with my OS. Well, everything except an annoying bug with Network Manager (again !) and Gnome-Shell (if no NM, Gnome-Shell crashed) that was fixed yersteday, and that was the reason of my presence here.

After a long time not joining nor writing any forums because of some issues I had in the past, this is maybe the first forum I'm looking forward to it.

I use arch for almost 4 years, with some switches over times to try out other distros. Arch tied to me up with its simplicity, power and performance. More then ever, I'm now encouraged to explore more deeply the subject of operating systems in general. I consider myself a low to moderate experienced user of gnu/linux, but my conclusion is a subject open for change because I realized I can't exactly see my position when I don't communicate with other users from whom I might learn or users whom I might help overcoming an issue.

Hey all from new and happy archlinux user! Good work with pacman and i like editing from terminal! I remember this from old school (DOS and things)...

I like rolling distros too. So I'm all into Arch!

Hello everyone! I came to Arch via Debian. I disliked gnome3 and started out looking for a distrobution that felt, cleaner is the best word I can think of. I ended up finding Arch via distrowatch.com and am very happy I did. I have re-installed 3 or 4 times before I finally narrowed down everything I wanted. I have recommended this distribution to every Linux person I know.

Looking forward to running Arch for a long time!

I've been a off and on Linux user for about 10 years now but never really used it as my primary OS until about a year ago when I started using Linux Mint on my desktop and laptop so I could start using and learning more.
I came over to Arch to test in vm so that I can really learn Linux. Maybe eventually I will replace Linux Mint for Arch on my laptop once I feel more comfortable with the installation and such.

Hey all,

Just posting this from my second arch install on a VM. And I gotta say it rocks! A smooth experience so far and loving the performance. I'm a Information Science student with a hobby of building PC's and messing with OSes. Most of my time I have been using Windows and I switched to mac around a year back. It has served me well but now I started learning programming I wanted to put my focus on open source en "free" software more. So I started messing with linux and Arch has been a really good place to start I must say.

Please bear with me since I still have a ***load to learn, and might ask stupid questions if I don't understand solutions to problems I found on google ;-).

I would like to take the opportunity as well to write a quick hello with this being my post #333 I thought it is time as well
Great fun to be here and learn about the Linux under-the-hood the Arch way.
Originally I used SuSe, then Debian for a long long time, followed by another time of PC abstinence - though that was not linked to Debian in any way of course More it was me using PCs too much during work so that I did not feel a need to tinker with one in free-time also.

When we finally got one again privately, Ubuntu had been around a while and I got a very happy buntu 10.10 user. That enthusiasm got a bit stressed with the first Unity trials. And since they did not seem to embrace Gnome3 at first, I looked for alternatives and tried out Arch.

Rolling with Arch for a little over half a year now has been an interesting and educating experience indeed.
Great community also here. Glad to have discovered you.

After some intimidation about the install process and a couple years of running ubuntu, mint, and fedora, I recently installed Arch (actually like 3 months ago). I initially encountered some problems, consulted the Arch Wiki, which by the way is AMAZING and very thorough, then I redid my Arch installation. I must say I am very impressed by this distro and love using it, making it my own, and learning more about how to tinker with the nuts and bolts of the linux system. I'm new to these forums, just saying hi.

Hey I'm Andrew and I'm a soft of wannabe power user at the time of writing. I'm not a computer scientist yet but I will be majoring in it beginning this fall and I'm tired of the security holes and reliability issues I have with windows. Unlike most people I know who are interested in the field, I'm interested in going deep under the hood and figuring out what's really going on at the very lowest levels. Sooner or later I'd like to move on to linux from scratch and build the whole gnu/linux system from source.

Unfortunatley my initial installation of arch has not been perfect, I ran into an issue with xfce, but I'm sure I'll become an active archer in no time!

Hey Everyone. I'm rather new to arch (less than a day), but not to linux. I got started with Caldera 1.3 back in 1997 (I know, SCO killed it). About a year later tried SuSE 6.4, and a few months later learned about Debian (potato at the time). Other than a few switches to gentoo, I mostly stuck with Debian until Ubuntu came around. I used to syadmin about 50 ubuntu workstations for graduate students/faculty at Penn State for the last 5 years, and recently made a switch to a full time Web Programmer position in the same unit at Penn State. With some of the recent decisions canonical made, I haven't been very happy with the ubuntu camp as of late. Last week I tried Cruchbang linux, found out it didn't have vim 7.3, so added the debian testing repos to get vim 7.3 back into it. But all in all, I kept yearning for something with recent up to date software. I took a look at gentoo, but cringed at the downtime I would have getting that built for my work computer, and after some research came across arch.

Arch reminds me of when linux used to be simple (and by simple, I mean simple for the power user, not the new person that just switched from Windows). As such, having just gotten arch installed at home (where my downloads are less than 50 k/sec) in the course of less than 24 hours and configured exactly the way I want it, I have a feeling I'm going to be around for the long haul. I even got abs installed and started looking at some of the pkgfile's and am completely amazed at how simple they are to read. I'm very excited to get involved with the arch community. I also really look forward to maintaining machines on a rolling release cycle opposed to having to deal with a mix of repositories containing backports, stable, and 3rd party binaries, as well as custom compiling any libraries from source that I want updated now!

As a side note, I got systemd installed and working just a bit ago. I find it much nicer and intuitive than upstart. Spent about 3 hours reading Wunschkonzert's blog post from 2010 about rethinking PID 1, and some of the subsequent updates. I have yet to dig into the code and take a look at it from that perspective yet, but I plan to in the near future.
