[SOLVED]HDMI audio and gnome volume applet issues

Hi all,

After setting up Arch without too many problems came the real pain in the ass: HDMI audio over a Asus NVIDIA GeForce EN210....
Eventually I got everything to work with the help of the ASLA en Pulse wiki pages, but I found the last piece of the puzzle here:

Maybe this is useful for others too.

The only problem I have now is that the ALSA deamon fails to load. I found this in the boot log file (/var/log/boot):

Does this mean I don't need the alsa deamon anymore? Sound still works normally after boot but a strange thing is that I can turn up and down the volume with the gnome shell volume applet but the volume of media applications like vlc do not react. Same problem with flash video's like youtube. I do hear the "blip" sound from the applet.

Does anyone have ideas how to fix this?

I got this as well, so I ran "alsactl store" and now it's fine.

Thanks, now the deamon loads without any problems.

The volume of media applications still doesn't react to the volume switch in the Gnome shell panel.

Any ideas?

I suppose the panel applet is trying to adjust the wrong volume control.

You can see the controls using e.g.:

alsamixer -c0     (if using pulseaudio, use -c0 to bypass the pulseaudio mixer crap)
amixer

Hi brebs,

I opened alsamixer -c0 and muted all the S/PDIF channels except S/PDIF and S/PDIF1. I played around with it and this are the ones I need. Sound works. So does a speaker test in the terminal (speaker-test -c 2).

But the problem is still there. Changing the volume does nothing with the audio from any application. I tested with a video in VLC, youtube video's and music in Banshee.

When no audio/video application in running I do hear the "blip" sounds when changing volume with the applet. I also discovered that a speaker test in gnome sounds settings is not giving any sounds.

Any other things I should look at?

yeah have the samre problem, adjusting sound in Amarok doesn't change anything.... happened after the last udev update, here is my bootup log :

yep my exact same problem,sound works,daemon starts correctly but changing sound in amarok has no effect...

Managed to get it to work sort of...
I deleted ~/.asoundrc and changed the content of /etc/asound.conf:

pcm.!default hdmi:NVidia
pcm:iec958 hdmi:NVidia

Now the volume changes work with the applet. Problem now is that the sound in Banshee doesn't work and sound in VLC is sometimes heavily distorted.
Speaker tests do not work. I get this error:

speaker-test -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.25

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy

First of all, there is no such thing as an ALSA deamon.

So look:

fuser -fv /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp*

If any program had ALSA open while you changed /etc/asound.conf, then close them. Probably, restarting xorg will do the trick.

I'm pretty new to Arch. The ALSA Wiki told me to start ALSA as a deamon. That's why I called it the ALSA deamon. I changed the name of the topic.
Learning every step of the way.

Anyway, fuser -fv /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp* gives me this output: Specified filename /dev/dsp* does not exist.
But I did a reboot and the speaker test runs, but no sound. The same with Banshee and flash video's. Also still distorted sound in VLC but the sounds in xbmc is clear. The volume, however can now be adjusted with the volume applet.

I have an Asus Geforce EN210 card.

I'm really stuck here...

That's an initscript, which loads the ALSA kernel modules and sets the volume.

Don't worry about /dev/dsp* - it's for OSS ("opensound"), and it's good that you don't have it. Opensound has been deprecated for years.

speaker-test, if you don't specify the PCM, will use the PCM named "default" - as will flash. So your redefinition of default (the line starting with pcm.!default) must be wrong.

Speaker test works again. I changed the asound.conf to it's original. I will give some more info.

Output from lspci -v:

My .asoundrc is empty.

Maybe something wrong with those settings?

I've got this working now. Solution was actually quite simple and on the alsa wiki....

Just needed to change the asond.conf or asoundrc to this:

defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.device 7
defaults.ctl.card 0
