Touchpad: once disabled, I have to reboot my computer to enable it

Hello,
When I disable the touchpad on my computer, through a button next to it, it stops working (which is the expected behaviour).
However, when I press it again, the touchpad remains disabled.
If I turn X off and on again, it remains disabled. I have to reboot my laptop to make it work again.

I do not know how to diagnose this problem. Could give me some tips?

Thank you very much.

Here are some details of my hardware:
My laptop is an Acer Aspire 7738
xinput -list gives:

⎡ Virtual core pointer                        id=2    [master pointer  (3)]
⎜   ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer                  id=4    [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜   ↳ PS/2 Mouse                                  id=11    [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜   ↳ AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint                    id=12    [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard                       id=3    [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard                 id=5    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button                                id=6    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus                                   id=7    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button                                id=8    [slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ HD Video WebCam                             id=9    [slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard                id=10    [slave  keyboard (3)]

Since it is unlikely this information is sufficient, what else do you need?
