Recommendations for animation software (for a six year old)

Hi All,

Well summer is coming and my six year old boy will be at home with me (you know, like, all day). He's interested in animation, but I'm a musician that doesn't know much about animation software. The 3d stuff looks a bit complex so I'm probably asking about 2d programs (unless someone has a convincing recommendation otherwise). He's only six, but he's quite bright and I'm happy to spend lots of time with him to get him started (he's a sweet kid). Once he gets the basics of something he usually leaves me in the dust fairly quickly, (the most recent example of that being "Plants vs. Zombies", he finished it, I didn't). Anyway, can anyone recommend a good starting program, one that would be a good stepping stone to other more complex programs should his interest continue?

Thanks

Maybe Scratch is something worth looking at (seems to be aimed at younger children).

First of all, you might be interested in Doudou Linux in general for him. It's a Linux distribution aimed at kids. Anyway, it has an application called Stop Motion for building animations. You can use it, of course, for making animations out of a series of photos, but there's nothing stopping you from doing one from a series of drawings made with, for example, Tux Paint (also included).

I think outside of options like that, you immediately get into such complexities as Gimp and Blender.

DoudouLinux looks pretty cool. There's also Sugar on a Stick: http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sugar_Labs/FAQ

Apparently it's for children in elementary school ("K-6", or ages 5-14 according to Wikipedia).

If you have a (relatively) modern computer, you can probably run them in VirtualBox just fine.

"How to Succeed with Linux"

I have made a personal commitment not to reply in topics that start with a lowercase letter. Proper grammar and punctuation is a sign of respect, and if you do not show any, you will NOT receive any help (at least not from me).

Thanks to all of you for the replies. I'm checking all of this stuff out and lots of it look very useful and my son is pretty exited about it. I'll mention another program that I found that is pretty nice and suitable, it's called tupi: 2d magic.

Thanks
