[SOLVED]ALSA not detecting sound card

I just installed Arch on a Lenovo Thinkpad E520, and ALSA doesn't seem to detect my sound card:

I get this when I do `aplay -l`:

aplay: device_list:252: no soundcards found...

But when I tried installing OSS, the sound worked but the sound was of really poor quality. How can I fix this?

I guess figure out what sound card you have and see what driver supports it. Maybe it isn't getting loaded automatically for some reason?

but lsmod | grep '^snd' doesn't give me anything. Neither does

If I'm not mistaken, your soundcard should use the snd-intel8x0 driver. Try "modprobe snd-intel8x0" and see if a soundcard appears then.

You're mistaken . samrat94's lspci output clearly says "High Definition Audio", so snd-hda-intel is the right module. snd-intel8x0 is for oooooooooooold sound cards using the AC'97 codec.

That's mainly because I should triple check my posts before hitting submit sometimes.

The module is actually called "snd_hda_intel" (underscores instead of dashes).

Actually, it doesn't matter if you use dashes or underscores.

@samrat94: If you don't have the snd-hda-intel module, something is quite screwed up on your machine. It's possible installing OSS made a mess. Maybe simply uninstalling OSS will clean up the mess.
