NTFS driver in Arch

I got some troubles with mounting ntfs external HDD to Arch computer because I didnt have ntfs-3g on my system. The problems started when I tried to write smth to HDD (for instance, mkdir test) under root: "permission denied" 0_0. After _pacmaning_ ntfs-3g everythin works properly.
So, the question: how was Arch able to mount ntfs HDD if it didnt have ntfs-3g?
